Dmitry Medvedev of Russia has cancelled his visit to Vancouver to attend and accept the flag for the next Winter Olympics during the closing ceremonies this Sunday. That's a very poor sport if you ask me. There are other countries that have done far worse. You would think that President Medvedev would follow the traditional attendance to the end of Sunday's Olympics as the next Winter Olympics shall be held in a place city called Sochi in 2014. If you ask me, I think it should go to the second city that was considered to be the host of these fine games. Russia is the next host of the Winter Olympics 2014, and Medvedev had planned to attend. No official reason for the cancellation was given, but speculation is that Russia was very disappointed with the defeat with the Hockey game with Canada. Instead of the President the mayor of the host city that is expected to receive the Olympic flag at the end of the Games. This news follows the defeat of the Russian men's Hockey Teams performance. Russia lost by as score of seven to three against Canada last Wednesday night. All I can say is I feel sorry for the Russian athletes.
It was the first time in history the Russians exited the Olympic tournament without playing for a medal. Russia has also fared poorly in the medal count at the Vancouver Olympics, holding fifth place behind Canada as of Thursday morning with 13 medals, less than half of their desired results. But so what? It's more about the game and the athletes I guess this is an example of poor losers at the best if you ask me. Yet look at so many other countries that have not faired out well. They still partake each and every Olympics. I feel that when there are teams that only have four athletes and keep coming back with hopes for a medal, and yet keep partaking it’s all what sport is about but when you have a government that is hosting the next Winter Olympics and chooses to be a poor loser – maybe there should be a ruling that if they don’t attend then it does go to the next country that came in second place for the Winter Olympics in 2014. Then there are great winners, regardless of the outcome. Joannie Rochette has continued to compete in figure skating just two days her mother’s sudden death giving an emotional and technically sound skate last Tuesday. And there are others with there own stories from all over the world. I really think the winners are within the athletes and this is they way that we do it. I think he is a disgrace to the athletes of if you ask me. Look at the Koreans even. They are the most resilient speed skaters I have ever seen in my life. Apollo Ono, this guy literally is agility at it’s best. Each and every player if you ask me regardless of what country they come from train so hard and with such spirit. Have you noticed how the Flag face painting took off? I thought I would place this in here. But only one country is of the likes of Russia I guess with this type of decision. There are so many stories that I have read but this one really does take the cake. If I was a member of the Olympic Committee I would give it the 2014 Winter Olympics to another country. But that is just me.

You know I have to get off these Olympics but I can't help myself...I love these games. I have never really taken the time to keep up with the Winter Olympics on a blog ever within my life.
interesting, but that is Russia
ReplyDeleteYeah Tee has been Putins top adviser. And only due to a loss within a game of hockey he is not going to the ceremonies to do the traditional acceptance on behalf of Russia. Pity if you ask me.
ReplyDelete..seems a wonderful games your country put on ..very impressive..dont let a childish gesture .by a Russian. spoil all the joy ..!
ReplyDeleteNo but I Caroline I dont know any country that would do this. Russia seems to be still the same old Russia...these are great games
ReplyDeletethey could be taking place in Ireland for all I care...well................I liked to be honest the manner that this was done in Vancouver to be honest.
But it's about the athletes. Government should never be involved in these Olympics. But right women's hockey Canada 2, USA 0 in the last period.
But it's fun just enjoying the teams. I just feel that Russia pulled a boner :)
So a dash of politics still spoiled the fun! I could not believe it. smiling* Noteworthy to note that in just a very simple thing manners could be seen ... well, that's politics Jack.
ReplyDeleteYeah but no...thats Russia.
ReplyDeletePolitics has played an unfortunate part of the modern Olympic games since the start. Look at Hitler, trying to provide proof that he was part of the master race, via his athletes.
ReplyDeleteAnd Russia has often been caught trying to cheat. The Chinese losers go home to live out a life of shame.
All of which is a shame.
It's a sports competition, and a great chance for those competing to develop their skills to the ultimate and then demonstrate them- a worthy goal under any circumstances.
Politics should have no role in it. But politics will always be around so what can you do?
I just try to enjoy the competitions and performances and ignore all the rest.
Congrat's to the Canadian womens hockey team. Both teams were a joy to watch.
ReplyDeleteYour smart! Yeah they have even at this one they were caught and challenged with regards to some drugs. And yeah I know in the past with Hitler - but you would think we have come much farther now. And it is a shame. A friend of mine wrote on this by the name of Doug in so many words. But I believe that 90% of it all is within the competition and I like you like to see the politics out of it. But these players are the cream de la cream.
ReplyDeleteAll I know is that in watching these games it's inspirational. One thing, I am not sure that the chinese do know as much as they did before. Seemingly the Russians still do. But when these games are over it really has been something that I have enjoyed all to much. I never had before not as much as now. I think it's an excursion away from all that we see in the world today. Two weeks of an interlude of all the other "things" that are going on in the world. I am sure you know what I mean. I have never seen someone that has such a great grasp on so many things truly as YOU do. I do mean that.
Yep :) Canada wanted to have 10 gold maybe Canada will have 9 and that is A ok!
ReplyDeleteAmerica leads great and Norway is second .....ironically the women have done far better than the men this time around. All are enjoyable, I was amazed with the Norwegians and as well the Koreans.
You're right, it was a breath of fresh air from all the political talk that never seems to cease.
ReplyDeleteAnd thank you for the compliment. I'm just a regular guy, really. But thanks. :)
I think the Russian dwarf is worried their planned attack on northern Canada within the next few years will also turn out to be a dismal failure.
ReplyDeleteMaybe next olympics dwarf tossing could be entered as a competitive sport for the Rusky.
Your welcome..
ReplyDeleteWell with the money spent in Vancouver that is not going to happen here. I forget what the entire cost was that British Colombia placed into security it's the highest in the history within than any other Winter Olympics. But Norway, look at that entire team. They are something as they are not as funded and yet they are in second place.

ReplyDeleteIt is good, hard to watch everything that is going on. I think Joanie should be skating soon, was hoping to see it before bed. Can`t wait any longer. I will record the program and hope it will be on. Well, and it is almost over already... It has been wonderful games so far. Must go to bed now... for real. Bye my friend.
ReplyDeleteShe was sensational in just trying as two days before here mother died. Now that is something. Good night there Danielle.
ReplyDeleteI've noticed that too Jack. They can change the color of the flag over the Kremlin but its still the same old cock and bull bad behavior...at least as far as sporting events are concerned.
ReplyDeleteIt is disheartening to hear of this stance. I have so enjoyed the games and sharing the experience within your blogs. They were truly remarkable! Everyone here in Michigan has agreed that Canada did an awesome job.
ReplyDeleteI never knew he was the main adviser to Putin Doug....it's the same old thing. I thought we were far beyond this now as far as these event have been. It's too bad for the athletes that is all I can say those from Russia and just due to the loss of one hockey game. Division still exists I guess but I tend to look the other way.
ReplyDeleteSo much for the spirit of the Olympics I suppose. And, yes, Canada has done a awesome job.
ReplyDeleteCinn, who cares sometimes it's something I guess we just filter out or factor out as far as I am concerned, I think this has been the best 14 days in comparision to what we see on television, internet, news etc. Mind you above Doug actually inpired me with getting onto the Olympics as I was so tired of the "bad news". This has been an excusion from that and it brings some sort of unity. Maybe not for all but I think for many. This could be taking place in any country right now and it would still be great.
ReplyDeleteYet it's kinda of nice that it's in a part of Canada that some have never heard of within there lifetime. And now around the world they see part of what Canada is. Within that part I do have a fond feel for it. Torino was excellent, all of them were but this was the first time other than Calgary, that I have literally watched it as I was there to see it back then. What I loved the best was all the pin trading from the people from all corners of the world. And this one tops that.
British Columbia will pay in taxes but all in all I would rather we had an economy whereby we spent more on these areas than in other parts of the world.
ReplyDeleteI look forward to the closing cermonies...as the first really took me by surprise. It defined Canada, some say it changed Canada in many ways.
I got a calgary police running shirt! Smiling
ReplyDeleteIt was an awesome Olympics! Canada did wonderful and the athletes showed the best spirit. I found it a joy to watch.
It was long ago yet it seems like it was yesterday! Then Lake Placid, I forget the name of a neighbour that used to go up there and bobsled each winter. I am not kidding.
ReplyDeleteDixon was his surname...
I hope those Russian hockey players don't get sent to work in the salt mines in Siberia.
ReplyDeleteMe as well Karyn.
ReplyDeleteBy not coming to the closing ceremonies I think he is protesting his athletes of being not very successful.
ReplyDeleteHi Fatos exactly...In Soviet times, success in sports was one of those symbolic things that showed the population it was ruled by a successful government and a successful political regime. Nothing has changed with Putin's government in Russia.
ReplyDeleteThere was a letter that was wrote to the International Winter Olympic Committee and Canada from the Russian government but for the life of me I can't find it. It was remarkable to see what they wrote but I will find it later.
ReplyDeleteAs Karyn said I don't hope that the Russian Team ends up in Siberia, I don't thing Gorbachev would be for this but that is just my two cents.
there were a couple of other incidents that were unfair concerning the russians-there I agreed with them-
ReplyDeletebut why let him not comming spoil anything in my humble opinion the mayor of the Socci should get to accept the flag anyway-
a far worse situation is thr WHISTLER SLIDE CENTER andwhen all in charge of it say that that young man lost his life was his own fault I am with every german there anday FOUL FOUL FOUL our 4-bob almost fird yesterday and there is no excuse for the people in charge there to allow this Center to stay open...
A great Winter Olympic Day...

Heidi, it's late here but I appreciate what you say. I am going to conclude this in my own manner after it's all over with. Yet this is all too good. It's late here and again I can appreciate where your coming from.
ReplyDeleteOver the weekend if anyone does have the chance and is in an area that is partakes within these 2010 games here is a like. It would be most apprciated, if you have two minutes...

There have been some rather glaring displays of poor sportsmanship in these games, haven't there? From Russia Without Love is only one of the stories!
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand several countries are saying that despite all these have been one of the best Winter Olympics Sue.
ReplyDeleteGosh I know where your coming from.
