The 2010 Winter Olympics

Rating:
Category:Other
As we come to a close of the winter Olympics, there are several areas that one can look at the monies spent, the competitions, some of the situations that had happened within the beginning of the ceremonies. On a level of 0 – 5. What is your overall rating of the 2010 Winter Olympics? Five would be excellent. One would be very poorly done.

All comments and all thoughts are more than welcome. For some reason my Rating stars don't work on this but for those that have been following this it would be very interesting to see how you rate this, I am going to do my own rating as well probably after I have a few posts. Note each Olympics have always been and economic concern. As well, there are pros and cons to each and everything. Yet there is ones own personal feeling on these Winter Olympics of 2010. The first Winter Olympics to be on the tenth year of the 21st Century. Please if you have the time do take all into consideration and your own review is more that appreciated. Please do keep it clean if you know what I mean. I do thank you for your participation. As most all have known I have been writing on the Olympics since the day they began. I don't reside in Vancouver, so I do have my own pros and cons with this as well. I reside in a part of Canada but I am a dual citizen so for me this is not politics, I am just interested in seeing what opinions each person has. I am sure there are many things to take into consideration for some and then there - well lets just say no one is right nor wrong. I am just trying to get a idea before the ceremonies of how everyone has felt with regards to these Winter Olympics.

It will be of most interest to see the varied views, as there are many. Thanks if you have a moment of your time and if you have not followed them at all if you wish please just indicate this.

Update > I am unsure why I can't do the star ratings myself on here but I hope, I do really hope that all that have watched these Olympics either PM me or do take the time to say what they think. There obviously are some that don't much take to the Olympics but yet I have had friends from Norway and the likes of so many different places it really would be nice to have your own input within this first time review as we the Winter Olympics are coming to a closure this weekend.

Regards and Respect,

Jack

  1. Hi Jack I have not seen much as they are on late at night and repeated in the PM when I am at work. Ine thing that has been on my mind is the 'danger' of these sports. One man has died. This to me has made me more aware. Should these sports be encouraged ? I dont par take in any myself. I am sure many have thoroughly enjoyed the events y up close and personal. Not quite the same from this distant.
I do enjoy the bits of ice staking i have seen....

  2. Thanks Sam! After this is done it will be interesting to see the outcome. And I don't expect it all to be good things. I would prefer the thoughts as you have done and a person can write within respect to how they do see it. This is not politics, I am interested to see what everyone feels to be honest. I am going to change my settings on this one.

  3. you are welcome Jack..I was not to sure exactly if my reply was what you are looking for..I just put my thoughts . I am not competitive in any way. So who wins and who doesnt means nothing to me as long as people enjoy what they do and are careful. The scenery is lovely although nicer to watch from the comfort of my warm lounge lol

  4. I should not be here for i don't live in Canada, And i didn't even got the chance to watch it all. But i think the money that was put in the preparations and to the games itself is all worth the effort. Just the thought of ~ "its my county that is hosting the winter Olympics" makes one a three nots higher ... and to be able to do that, the host country needs to improve everything from the smallest details to the most bigger elaborated ones. Every hosting countries does that ... the glory is for everyone. :)

... well of course not counting out some dangers, but in every sports lies some enevitable things. And in every events comes some lousy cries :)

  5. I watched almost all of it live in the dead of night here. For the most part it was run well-some things were very bad but when the weather throws you a curve well-and some issues with some new judging rules but all in all the Canadians did a good job and shoed of their little corner of the world quit well. The germans were very pleased with the way things ran but we got live everything which my daughter in San Francisco didn't get and the people on the west coast were very very upset about it so much so that they will be showing the closing live all across the USA- now this not the Canadians fault but NBC-
all in all they could have had more snow and the ice rink melted 2twice but oh well-
I personally feel very bad about the luge and bob sled run it never should have been used and a poor young man had to pay the price-also lots of others had bad accidents on it-
the down hill area was way to icy and they were very lucky they didn't have anyone killed there -but like I said I watched itt all wow I can't believe I did that lol-

  7. We have been travelling all of January and February in the western USA from Canada down to the Mexican border. So we missed the Opening Ceremonies (sigh) and most of my favorite speed skating and fancy skating. Old Man managed to see some of his favorite curling meets and we caught a few hockey games (that's an example :) of Canadian culture). We had the same problem as the above Starfishred mentioned...every 4 or 5 days we would check in to an RV site that offered cable, but there was very little on during the day and then we had to wait until 8:00 at night to see anything about the Olympics on our little travel TV. Even the news channels concentrated on the American wins, which is understandable I guess. But I was sad about missing some of the highlights like Norway's curling pants.

  10. I'm not really a fan of the Olympics, I don't think I have a competitive bone in my body and don't often watch competitions of any sort.
However, I always try to watch the opening and closing ceremonies ... and the figure skaters.
The Opening Ceremony was amazingly beautiful ... I was glued the the TV for that. Bravo Vancouver! I was wondering how Canada you would compare to China's Opening Ceremony of 08. They did a grand job!!

  15. The stars are there for rating! I will leave the half-star for what I have heard from others that the French Canadians have not been represented enough in the opening ceremonies which I have not been able to see yet (will do in the days after the end, from the recording). All the competitions I have seen were interesting, athletes giving their best. Beside Apollo Ono who has been a bit pushing his luck (which has not paid him much in the end) or the Koreans who in my opinion have lost a chance of getting three medals by wanting more for themselves as individuals and ended up falling and losing two medals. These situations do not show good spirit, seen from our end. However, I am very happy for athletes such as Anderson who has won gold in the snow board giant slalom this afternoon after 16 years of career. What a way to end a career, and the way these guys are shaking hands after a descent, even if they have lost it. I am proud of our athletes, and of all from around the world, Kim Yu-Na who has won gold at women figure skating, the Swiss curling team winning the Bronze in-extremis against Sweden today, Joanie Rochette who is dancing beautifully in memory of her mother at this very moment. I must say I did not like all the bad comments that have been made against Weir, the young figure skater. These comments are a disgrace in my opinion. We are there to appreciate the performances of these athletes, not their private lives or the way they look. For the rest, besides the rain which is difficult to control, I have not seen anything that would make these games bad ones. To the contrary, from what I have seen, all seem to have been going well. Tonight we will enjoy the gala of the champions in figure skating, and the last competitions. The end of the games will have been fantastic for Canada has far as winning medals goes. We have won more today, and maybe another is coming in curling with the men. So there, lets enjoy the end ceremonies and cheer once more for all of these efforts that these athletes have put into this.

  16. Hiya Jack,
I'm watching the award ceremony for the silver awards of men's curling as I type this. I have just loved the whole winter olympics! I have to admit that I haven't seen as much of it as I would have liked, but all the same it has been a wonderful time to receive positive affirmation of sportmanship and competitive talents worldwide. It gives a sense of unity to all mankind and Canada has done an excellent job. Awesome, Canda just received the mens Gold in curling :) There were some devasting parts in the beginning with the loss of a life. Ah, but to go out doing the one thing that one enjoys the most! As an athelete, my friends and I have often said there would be no better way than to leave the world running. Of course, after we finish the race! My heart felt condolences went out to the family in their time of grief. My son and I had the most fun watching the luger. I can't forget his laughter when he watch the men speeding downhill. It was definitely a precious moment as a mom to see him enjoy the ceremonies as much as I. It took the recent death in the event out of such harshness for us. I had a lot of fun sharing Canada's first gold medal with you upon your arrival home that eve. I also enjoyed the ice skating competitons and learning about different trainings that happened in Michigan regarding snowboarding before the actual events. There was speculation in the beginning about the location being in Vancouver and the lack of snow and ice in the area. Especially when the area was bombarded with extra snow after bringing it in to the area just prior to the beginning of the opening ceremonies. However, the opening was absolutely fabulous and all here agreed that Canada has done an extraordinary job of hosting the Winter Olympics. (hope my writing isn't too scattered, work 12 hours today.) Thank you Jack for sharing the winter olympics with all of us too.

  17. Not to worry Maryanne, these are coming to an end and it has been something of interests these past two weeks to say the least, some have been watching and some havent. I myself have not watched these games like I have this year. So it's all good and no worries.

  18. Wow you know these teams Danielle. It's interesting as within Canada I could be corrected but most all of the golds with the exception of a few came from Quebec. It's a great thing for Canada yet there have been some things that have not been perfect - that is within all that was done especially with the young man from Georgia, as there are some things that Vancouver did not prepare for as best as they could but what I see is that it's been something that Canada has come to be seen. Not only by way of the competition but in a manner of what Canada is. I have never as I have mentioned before seen where Vancouver has been called a city that is something that many never realized. Within anything there is no perfection. I have to admit I don't know all the names of these players yet there are a few from Canada and from other countries that stand out in my mind. I have to admit I look forward to the hockey game this afternoon, I am sure that there are many that are following these Olympics. Ice is made out of water and I think these games were more than half full.

  19. I love the Olympics! Joannie Rochette brought me to tears!

  20. Yeah she really was something...to compete right after ones mother passes away within itself is something that she could have declined and went home. She didn't.

  21. Heidi, it has been great watching it all, I have not watched all of it but most of it.

  22. Heidi, there must have been a time that you did more than just swimming. Yes 90% of this was done to the best all in all. Vancouver ironically to many never gets that much snow each year. Yet this year it's been warmer than previous ones as it is even here. I didn't know about the coverage issue, as for the most part there were times I would just watch the conclusion from the Canadian station or watch some of the games as the other night. And as well, I am looking forward to this hockey game today. Heidi for the life of me I never thought Canada would get so many gold medals. I looked at the Norwegians as being third. Germany has always done well. Snow has been a problem there since the beginning. They were hauling snow to Whistler for days by truck. I thought with all the money spent on this that making snow would be no problem. As they invested so much into so many things. One relative there three years ago was involved in the building of some places there. And as well, the Georgian. There are some lessons to be learned from these Olympics. I could list a few more. Yet here again I hope I can conclude this in a meaningful manner tonight or tomorrow night.

  23. There are countries that obviously are within that tropics, Maritess I have never looked at all the countries to see who all was in the games. I know India was and there were a few from the opening ceremonies that really surprised me. The Olympics are not financially sound. There has never been one that has paid for itself. But I see the Olympics as something that we should keep going. Especially in these times. Dare I say, and I will. Do we need to be spending all we are on wars that will never be resolved. The amount of money has never brought about any value, not within the last ten years. So when you factor that in....this is not war, this is game. Game is good! It has a way of unifying people. I believe.

  25. Aside of the ceremonies - these Olympics are now finished and it's been tremendous!

  26. Canada had the highest number of wins, meaning gold medals out of all the countries participating.
Congrats to Canada on a successful olympic games, even though to be truthful I do not support the games nor the money spent on them.
A special congrats to both Canada and the US for this outstanding last game!
It will be party night and dancing in the streets for the hard core hockey fans.

  30. Just this morning I watched the skating exhibition that I taped last week. That is how I watched all of the figure skating, which is the only area I am interested in. One of the most poignant moments was the skating of the young Canadian woman who had just lost her mother. How beautiful her skating, both in competition and the following exhibition. Watching the short skate, I teared up as skater Scott Hamilton's voice caught while commenting on her courage. I enjoyed the competition between Pleshenko and Lysacek. Both stunning skaters - the judging was correct, in my opinion. If a medal depends on one move, then yes, Pleshenko had the quad. But he also had some leaning in his jumps that Lysacek did not have. How I enjoyed watching the top six young ladies compete . Wonderful performances. I was thrilled when the husband and wife pairs took gold. Amazing that they skated first in the short program and never lost their spot. Did my heart good to see their devotion to each other and their sport.

but I did watch and it's ironic as this did take place one year
ago just two days ago there was an celebration. That
was something to watch I think for many.
