Have you ever wondered why we call certain things by the names we do?
Take animals, for instance.
Why do we call a bull a "bull"? Why isn't it a "snark" or a "quiggle"? Why is it called a "duck" rather than a "dufus"? I realize this isn't really heavy intellectual stuff on a Monday but inquiring minds (like mine) want to know. My super duper scientifically reliable intensive research unearthed the fact that "bull" comes from an Anglo Saxon word, belan which meant to roar or bellow.
Ducks are birds that "duck" in the water and the name comes from an old English word meaning diver. The word is spelled d-u-c-e. I don't know exactly how to pronounce it. We have a toy poodle and poodles got their name from the German word "pudel", short for "pudelhund", which stands for a dog that splashes in water (although I've never known ours to do that). "Horse" comes from the Greek word "hippos".On that note, a hippopotamus means "
river horse" because "potamus" means river. I thought they were pigs. Maybe that's just their eating habits.
Who named the first animal and what was it? Well, biblically it was Adam, as in, "Then God told Adam to name the animals. All the creatures gathered around: those that crawled and those that flew and those that swam in the rivers; creatures with four legs and creatures with two, those with bushy tails and those who could see in the dark. They were all equal, and Adam had always been one of them. Yet, as he began to name them, he drew himself apart. And the first animal he named was.....the unicorn."
A quick post as I am off to bed in one hour....
ReplyDeleteWhat Bible are you reading? Just curious.
ReplyDeleteI agree with babykatg.what Bible are you reading..
ReplyDeleteG'day Jack,
ReplyDeletewell I can't tell you about most of the animals but I did post the story of how our Kangaroo got it's name a while back,(and it wasn't from any bible) lol ... here it is to refresh your memory :- When the English settlers landed in Aus, they noticed a strange animal that jumped extremely high & far. They asked the Aboriginal people using body language & sign trying to ask about this animal, They responded with “Kan Ghu Ru” the English then adapted the word Kangaroo, What the Aboriginal people were trying to say was “ we don’t understand you”, “Kan Ghu Ru” hahahahah
Oh I have this one site that is rather cool and last night I know I was much too tired and I should not have got on here. I have not read the bible in a long time. I have one, actually I have one that was passed on from generation to generation but this writing had nothing to do with the bible I read. I am smiling here as there is a writer that resides in Saskatoon and I got this and I placed it on without really reading it. As I mentioned really quick! And then I had to go over some stuff with work so take it for what it's worth.
ReplyDeleteSo silly me - trying to post something that I had no clue of all that was being posted (being completely honest) so there...
:)
very interesting!
ReplyDeleteDont beat yourself up over it..It's not a BIG thing..we all agree to disagree on subjects because what you saw and read ..everyone is not going to look at it the same way you do..dont worry about it..(smiles)
ReplyDeleteI know this name thing before we bought our first toy poodle. So it didn’t surprise us when three of our toy poodles love jumping to pools of water. What baffles us is Simba, our only male toy poodle, not sharing the same enthusiasm about water as the rest do. :-/

ReplyDeleteHahaha, I should not have bothered writing this as it was something quick and I am just on for a quick time as I have been doing some "homework" and I have to get to bed shortly, but thank you. Bye the way a very nice picture of yourself. Compliment...
ReplyDeleteWell maybe Simba just is not the ordinary poodle or perhaps she just enjoys dry land. :)
