The vice presidential debate is now history. And the election process continues and as we all can see it's now down to two more debates between Borak Obama and John McCain. Here in Canada we have elections going on as well - but with all taken into account I do believe that with all that took place last week and more Canadians as well as other countries have been watching something very interesting as well as watching with concern. I know I have.
As far as the politicians that we have in place right now. It seems rather dull. The focus goes on with global warming and not real true areas of merit. Only with one area - Afghanastan. I think there is a host of things here in Canada that need and could be debated in a much different manner. But those are just my own thoughts.
However that’s the election not the working of a government to fix a financial crisis.
It was amazing to watch this process of two parties trying to come to agreement to obtain a bill, without taking other things into account. That's politics I guess. While rescuing an economy, and amid all the warnings senators couldn't help themselves. They took $120 billion of pork on the already enormous package of $700-billion bailout before passing it. The House followed suit in passing it.
It's hard to believe but it's true. While so much was at stake take into consideration what else was introduced into Senate:
$2 million tax break for an Oregon company that makes wooden arrows for children.
$100 million tax break for auto racetrack owners.
$192 million for the Puerto Rico and Virgin Islands' rum industry.
(Right now I am pondering what the budget is and how much goes or does not go into the military).
Then, there's another $148 million for wool fabric producers.
Hollywood gets $48 million a year for productions filmed in the U.S. and $33 million to companies doing business in American Samoa.
And on it goes.
At a time of nation need while in the midst of a presidential campaign hour of national need.
Pork barrel spending is being reviled and promises are made by both parties to rid Congress of the practice, senators couldn't restrain
themselves. The still keep doing it. There is no shame.
Now don't get me wrong, there are many people who enter politics and serve for the betterment of the greater public. But when I watched as Republicans and Democrats battled over the $700 billion bailout of the financial industry. This is money that is needed to help banks access cash for loans for ordinary Americans and it is also needed to help many small companies access cash to meet their payroll obligations. But, you see these politicians vote against it. I guess it's because they are concerned about their political future with elections coming in the very near future. For myself I believe that the election is separate to what had taken place with this bill. Certainly thereafter a potental new leader needs to know what he has to work with economically within a revised budget. So while you may think this is an American problem, don’t kid yourself, this has major ramifications for many other countries as well.
I just hope leaders have the will to do what may not be politically correct, economically responsibly. As the old sports saying goes, “sometimes you have to take one for the team”.
And in every country we say in our own way "In God We Trust". I will trust some things when I see the outcome...
It always amazes me how much Canadians know about US politics and how interested they are in them. Meanwhile, probably 3/4's of our population probably could not name all the leaders of the 4 major parties in our own election. Go figure.
ReplyDeleteIt's like they don't care anymore what the people think. No at all. No shame once so ever. I find that sad. I mean some of the breaks and money they are giving is ridiculious to say the least.
ReplyDeleteI'm more consider old conservationist but I don't choose one sides in politics. Depends on who is who. Look at our choices this year. One Monstrous Baby Killer--Obama (how can you just overlook that? And One Moose Slaughter Animal killer. Both pointing the finger the other way. The finger pointing syndrome. Who could support either? Their both monsters and what have the supporters become that they would praise either? And call themselves very caring of life, Is one monstrous evil consider better of the two? Both past voting records show they don't really care for the environment. A yes here but many nos. Have we all become monsters in a way that nothing phases us about this on either --have we????? We just overlook it and find something to praise them for?? I find that hard to do. I just can't let any praise for either fall from my lips. How could anyone? Tell me please?
And that one he voted many times against child protection. How many families were hurt before the law was past. Who can face this and overlook this and praise them?
I guess money is what it is all really about.
If I had a choice I would give all I own and start over for a better person to run
I kind of hope one of the others less popluar comes in as a surprise to both.
I don't know you but I was raised in the USA till my teens, and lived there afterwards. So I do reside here in Canada but I probably understand more with America than with Canada as I have not been here all my life. I can't speak for other Canadians. So I guess I am a mix of sorts. And I am proud of that.
ReplyDeleteI think it's fair to say that politics are something that are just that. But we hope for the betterment of societies. Regardless of whom leads a nation the hope we all desire is trust. I feel that there is no perfect person in any area but most of all this election has went so far into so many things that sometimes there is defamation of the candidates that does not bare the facts. I just don't like the idea of "pork" still existing where there are REAL areas that of concern for the common person like you or I. Hopefully the next four years will be a new beginning had. On several fronts.
ReplyDeleteAnd Obama is my State Rep. I know him. I have talk to him. He has lied to my face, tried to charm me, and weaseled out of things. I'm not talking about abortion here --I am talking about survived aborted babies lying on a table. Struggling still for life. And him saying they don't deserve Medical or burial--throw it in the trash. You'll find videos and that out there on web. It is a fact here. He could look at this life and not care and just go on and talk about his campaign with a smile.
ReplyDeleteI have nothing to say good about a monster like this
Don't even get me started on the other.
I suppose I am ranting a bit but I find it so sad to see anyone support this in any way and praise either for anything.
Sorry for rant on your blog
I'm not asking for perfect but values would help.
Since when is life of so little importance? that is not a REAL issue?
And some even dare try to compare this baby lying there to war. There is a difference
Are their absolutely no good men around that we have to settle for people like these?? I hate to think that
I never met the man personally, nor have I met McCain. But I know whom I like. But I guess this is where freedom of speech does apply. Everyone has that right. There was a great saying by regarding manhood, and I have it from when I was in NY but know one is perfect but a leader is one that takes more than we have or would ever see. It goes with the territory. Whom you support is whom you do by choice and everyone has that. If we did not - we would not be living in the societies we take for granted. This might be more about the congress and house - the government at large.
ReplyDeleteG'day Jack,
ReplyDeleteNice to have you back with a real doozie, but of course I am going to sit this one out, being off shore so to speak with little or no knowledge of how American politics works or if it does work , all I know is I hope they sort it out and soon as our superannuation is sliding with the rest of the economy
Over 100 Billion was lost within Canada's Toronto Stock Market. So it does hit us all. What is of importance one has to ask themselves.
ReplyDeleteBut life goes on...
