Question of the Week # 1 Is the style that we write changing as time goes along?

  1. I believe it does. Especially if someone does a lot of writing. Their abilities and style becomes their own. I use to write in 3rd person as if I was an observer. That worked well for me because I was an observer in life. My writing was ok. In the last 2 years I have become to write from the viewpoint of my main character and in 1st person. Suddenly things came to life and became real. People can see, smell and feel what my character feels and they become part of the story. This has been very successful for me.

  4. Styles of writing change no only for individuals but in general for societies. Most young people today do not think in fully developed ideas, but in short spurts. Much like text messaging. Therefore, their writing is nor developed either. I have noticed this in teens. Having said that, my granddaughter is 7 and is in 1st grade and is being taught to write in complete ideas. Maybe we are turning a corner.

  7. I have actually found that teens and young adults can think in more consisely and don't put extra filling in sentences. In essense their writing is more developed and direct. Its not a style older adults are use to seeing because they want a more flowery speech. Example - today - Sarah's dog is dead. 20 years ago - Sarah's brown dog with a few black spots around it's paws was found dead this morning while laying on the floor.

  8. Hmmm, probably more like: "You know Sarah? The lady that lives on the corner in that blue-trimmed house? The one that had that large mongrel dog. You know, the big brown flop-eared mutt with with the black spots on its paws that looked like mud. Well, Sally told me this morning that it was most likely poisoned. Sarah found it lying on her floor dead as a door nail!"

  9. Exactly. I was just going for a sentence but you are right. People see the paragraph as a developed thought and sentences. In essence it can be taken down to Sarah's dog died. You deem the exact same information in 3 words vs. 70 words.

  10. Different people different strokes, and that will always be, Jack.
    Just my thoughts :)

  11. Do you really think we are that different? Maybe for me the lines are so grayed I don't see it. I'm very liberal so I tend to not see the color, religion etc lines. We all need basic housing and food. We all need friendship and love. We need to be warm in the winter and find a break from the heat in the summer. At times like this when much of the world is in crisis we bond together and support one another. Few can turn their back and not care when someone is hit with a crisis, that primal coding clicks in and we offer a hand.

  12. I was so tired last night I read your notes here but didn't respond. That's how it is with writing for me personally. Sometimes I'm tired and sometimes I am inspired yet in many writers they seem to have a unique style so much so at times that one could probably guess who wrote something without seeing the authors name. Things we are going through and have experienced does have an effect on writing in many cases. I am amazed at some of the great writing that has come forth from people experiencing brokeness and some of the most beloved hymns. Fanny Crosby wrote Blessed Assuarance though she was blind and spoke of something she saw through eyes of faith. Helen Keller also wrote of sight beyond what is physical . There have been so many amazing writers and still are.

  13. Cheryl I can with easy say that I have not been able to write all that well. For some reason at times I feel that I need to write for others. But there is something to that as it beats the heck out of me what some have to say. I will say it but I am not perfect either and wow I could write on this before yet to write to other pages and understand some of the meaning. I guess I am getting not angry, just older in my ways.

I know some of these questions were atypical. But without a good premise. As well I loved your references here.

  14. We evolve yet there is more than some things wrote - yet by no means do I feel I know it all. I am not one of those kinds.
We evolve for the better perhaps Lynne.

  16. well said, jaderuid. I for one sees the problem but I can't do anything for I am just a dot. What Iam trying to do in my own little way, is for myself not to add to the problem. And if only each of us will do that, the world will be a heaven to be in. hugs. maritess* :)

  17. The reason I came up with this was that things have changed and it is much different now. I do like to read and kudos to those which can. Where what I found last night was no on multiply but even within pages on the internet on really has to dig for some valid websites other than the news.
