The Health Care Bill Passed....

Well this marks a day in the history of United States of America. As effectively this evening the Health Care bill has just passed. Having lived there and now living in Canada and being a dual citizen I really have to say that is literally a time in history. For it's amazing that this has come to be.

I was certain that this would cause President Obama his chance for a second term in office but from what I gather now those that do not have the ability nor the availability to afford health coverage do have it.

I honest have never seen so much politics surrounding this but he actually succeeded in bring about something that marks a day in the history books.

"It provides coverage for 96 percent of Americans. It offers everyone, regardless of health or income, the peace of mind that comes from knowing they will have access to affordable health care when they need it," said Rep. John Dingell, the 83-year-old Michigan lawmaker who has introduced national health insurance in every Congress since succeeding his father in 1955.

In the run-up to a final vote, conservatives from the two political parties joined forces to impose tough new restrictions on abortion coverage in insurance policies to be sold to many individuals and small groups. They prevailed on a roll call of 240-194.

Ironically, that only solidified support for the legislation, clearing the way for conservative Democrats to vote for it.

The legislation would require most Americans to carry insurance and provide federal subsidies to those who otherwise could not afford it. Large companies would have to offer coverage to their employees. Both consumers and companies would be slapped with penalties if they defied the government's mandates.

Insurance industry practices such as denying coverage on the basis of pre-existing medical conditions would be banned, and insurers would no longer be able to charge higher premiums on the basis of gender or medical history. In a further slap, the industry would lose its exemption from federal antitrust restrictions on price gouging, bid rigging and market allocation.

Please keep it respectfull...

  2. That's funny! Time to take the blinders off, wouldn't you say?

  3. As long as they are not going to force me to buy insurance, or fine me if I don't buy insurance. How about real health care reform instead of always this damn health insurance BS.

  4. I know its still controversial, and not everyone is going to agree. If you want an argument, you won't get it from me. I've waited too long for this step. You have your issues--this one's one of mine. Have a nice evening.

  5. It's politics and was outrageous politics if you ask me but that is just my own point of view. Regardless every person has the opportunity for coverage. I think that it truly is remarkable...

  7. What about the over charges and false charges from the hospitals? What about the drug companies charging three to four times what a medicine should cost? What about REAL health care reform?

  8. It's a step in the right direction if you ask me.

  9. Deficits galore.
At a time when unemployment is i the double digits, mandated heath care and penalties is ludicrous.
Anybody can walk in any ER in America and get free treatment
Poor people have taxpayer funded chip, medicaid, or medicare.
This is just another tax on the remaining workers whose companies aren't large enough to have to provide health insurance.
I've read many articles on Canada's health care.
One example: They'll fix your broken arm(same as here), then charge you for the cast, weekly visits and adjustments, and meds. This is no free ride folks.

  10. What good is insurance when it only covers a percentage. I know people with insurance coverage that went bankrupt over the costs of what they had to pay for going into hospital. Insurance only pays a part and you can be left with 10s of thousands to hundred of thousands of dollars you have to pay. It will not make a whole lot of difference because insurance was only a minor part of the problem. It was a pretend to do something bill to satisfy the Glorious Leader so he can appear to be doing something.

  11. I was raised in NY and I returned from NY 9 years ago and I saw it happening with a few of my friends so I do know what you mean. I don't think that any country in the world has an entirely perfect system. Yet it's much better than it was.

  12. Naturally....as I have the right to say anyone who believes this is good for America read the bill with blinders on. We'll soon have health care like Canada where my good friend up there couldn't get treated for kidney stones until he almost had renal failure. Here in America with our screwed up system, it would have never got to that point.

  13. Bull....and I can take you to task on that in a factual manner literally.

  14. yes it is as I reside in canada and have been in every province. it's bull ...

  15. Only if you don't have any ID on you and lie about who you are. I was in an auto accident and went to ER (A&E) and repetitively told them I could not pay. I told the truth about who I was, and later got a big bill from ER. If you don't pay, they go to court and get a judgement against you and if you don't pay the court ordered payment, then the sheriff shows up on your door to take your property. The same will go for if you don't pay your part after the finsurance pays their bit. This new bill could really hurt struggling middle class people. I knew it would pass, they was going to pass some worthless bill come hail or high water. The Glorious Leader dictated it, and so it must be. Plus they want to start on their long holidays. They were talking about the Glorious Leader's first year, and I was thinking, the year is not over. However, I forgot they shut down for November and December, and a whole lot of January.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Look, I am not lying. I went to ER after being in a auto accident and told them I could not pay. They treated me and I got a bill from the hospital for ER treatment that was around $600.00 if I recall. So it is not nonsense. You are thinking about the illegals that lie about who they are and they can not track them down. If you give your name and address and info, they will send you a bill..

    ReplyDelete
  21. LOL Because I don't want my country to be Canada or England I'm divisive?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Well I think that you can write this on your own blog.

    ReplyDelete
  23. My apologies secretcorners.. I only agreed with everyone can go to an ER and get treatment, but yes, they will certainly send a bill and the cost of an ER visit for a person without insurance can drive someone to bankruptcy.. It is a problem, but at the end of the day, I'd rather have that than to wait in line like my friend in Canada...

    ReplyDelete
  24. Well speaking for one of those hard working tax payers.. whom has friends w/o health insurance... because they are having trouble finding work...
Wake up and smell the coffee... Think in common practice... simple math...
This bill is based on ppl paying taxes... If the unemployment rate doesn't recede... less ppl will be tax-payers... creating more taxes for the current workers to pay...
Over time the dollar will become weaker than it currently is...
Also making more businesses to have to carry the burden here in America. Because the cost of Labor has a direct affect on every business...
Sending more business overseas. Like China, Taiwan...etc.
Making underpaying Companys such as Walmart have a larger marketshare... like that is possible.
All and all it may seem like a quick fix to part of the problem, but we out a strong workforce in America we will become weak like the stock market did... Without jobs being created... we will become a welfare country with ppl strongly relying on the country and not for themselves like the forefathers had intended in the beginning...
Just like Socialists of Russia... do you recall how that played out?
Enjoy the rest of your evening....
    DH

  25. Why are we just looking at Canada? How about Australia and the like of every other nation?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Canada has a two tier system as all industralized countries and they do provide and within Canada we export all our professionals thus it causes a brain drain from here. So Canada is not as socialized as you may think but I do sincerely understand in how you have given your point of view. As well a great evening to you as well.

  27. To each their own point of view. I think time will show that those of us who opposed Obamacare were right. We shall see!!

Anyway, I was just here to give Doug a hard time because he canceled our fishing trip.

    I love Canada...Peace!!

  28. I love both these nations with a passion ....and all the best.

  29. Health insurance is about risks. I would sell health insurance to someone hoping that person would not get sick, and I would not have to pay out. Heath insurance is about making money, not giving out money. So now the government is going to force insurance to sell a policy to cover a person who has an illness they know about. There is no risk involved for making money, they will be paying out money as soon as the ink is on the document. This will force companies to stop selling health insurance.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I was not referring to Canada... America if you haven't noticed is traveling in the direction where it provides everything for you... There is no such thing as a free lunch...
Yet was our ecomony struggle and unemployment is a 25 yr high...
Being in a direct Labor orientated Market...
I do not see a growth of job placement... in many areas I still am seeing shrinkage... and there will created a bigger problem... less ppl earning a living. Free Insurance will not provide ppl food for their families... Only newly created jobs from strong companies that will also strengthen the ecomony as well...
Anyways this is probably the hottest topic in America in decades.. has at the very least gotten more ppl involved in our nations politics...
Thanks for letting me speak my mind as well...

  32. What about Insurance companies who sell ppl Life insurance they don't need? What about Insurance companies who sell Car insurance... that is clearly not enough or too much?
Let's talk about how the Government did such a grand job with our Social Security...
It is almost funny that it is nearly out of funds... Yet it is mandatory that it is deducted out of all our checks... Also most ppl don't realize that you probably will never see yours unless you retire within 10 yrs...
I just can't wait to see how they will mis-mange national healthcare, like they did with Social Security...

    ReplyDelete
  33. The government is going to have to force people to buy insurance because that way, we would pay insurance from now to we die. If they did not force us to buy insurance, then we would all wait until we got sick, then we would go and buy insurance from companies that can not refuse to sell it to us even though we are sick and they know it. Since they are going to force the insurance to sell policies they know they will have to pay off on, they have to force us to give money to the insurance companies even if we don't want insurance. The whole thing is a big farce just so the Glorious Leader can strut around saying he got health care reform when it is not any reform at all!

    ReplyDelete
  34. I think we all are feeling the economy due to some that were in office that faultered with where and what they were doing with the money. And that is a pity..

So we all in every country are paying that price economically...I understand you very well. I mean that in a good manner.

  38. The social security and health care full of potential to be mismanaged by the government or whomever have the power to control it. US now have the biggest debt among countries. And I am afraid to say all countries still give US the trust; that US government still have the ability to pay it someday...based only on mutual trust. But it is risky since international affairs, trusts thus lending can not be held in secure ways.
Shortly, medical care is the tool you can use to get it...as well as social security and pension fund.

  40. If you are middle class and own your own home (assets) and lose your job and can't pay the insurance, you can be fined $10,000/day for each day you let lapse in the policy. You think this is some "great" day! This is the baldface of corruption! Better would have been out and out socialized medicine!

    ReplyDelete
  41. What is your definition of socialized medicine may I ask? Secondly, I think it's a start of something a reform if you will but that is within the contents of the bill. Which has nothing to do with socialized medicine but the theory behind what has been passed. When every person has some form of coverage - yes I do find it to be as I have seen some that literally went bankrupt or did not get what they needed because of the fine print within insurance policies.

  42. The government setting up not for profit health care system to run side by side the for profit system. The non-profit would not necessarily be free, but would be on a sliding scale. the rich could go to the non-profit hospitals as well as the poor, but the rich would pay more than the poor.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Insurance was not the real problem with health care. How about a hospital charging someone $1000.00 for a use of a room to get a test done that took five minutes. I saw this happen with my Mum. That is what the real problem with health care is about. Drug companies charging $100.00 for one pill when it will sell in other countries for a tenth of that price. Insurance would be damn cheap in the US if it was not for the jacked up prices in hospitals and drug companies. Why in hell did not Congress go after the real problem with health care in the US?

    ReplyDelete
  44. Someone made the statement, a lot of Americans don't have health insurance, so the dimwits in Congress come up with, "oh, then let's just force everyone to buy insurance".

    ReplyDelete
  45. I will have to read over this bill but it's a beginning and the real problem I think has been the situation of a baby boom flux and trying to keep up with it in these times. There are several factors to take into account but I have always maintained that America does not need Canada's medical plan, but one done in a American manner as if you compare the population of Canada at 38 million to nearly 390 million in America - it's not an easy undertaking...

    ReplyDelete
  46. I suggested in a blog here on Multiply an idea. I called it a health savings plan. I invited staff of Congressman Ron Paul's office to read it. Congressman Paul now has a bill before the House called the Health Savings Act. (And yes, what Kim, said is my definition of socialized medicine. I think a government owes it to its people that they all be healthy, and all medical fees be paid out of the general fund to a HIGHLY regulated medical industry.)

    ReplyDelete
  47. There were so many bills floating around, I have no idea which one they voted on.

In order for any insurance to do me any good, it would have to cover 100% of the costs. Are they going to force them to cover 100% of the costs? Because at the moment, health insurance does not cover all the costs. I had a family member go to hospital for tests and after the insurance paid off, they were left with over a $1000.00 they had to pay. I could not pay a $1000.00 hospital bill. That was AFTER insurance paid out. So forcing me to buy insurance will just be forcing me to buy a product that I can not use. It would be better if they forced me to buy cheetos, at least I could use cheetos.

  48. This is a very interesting perspective from all - I don't much like how one chap came in here but for now I just wrote and while I was doing another write and this all came so fast - I have to be honest with you it has been hard in keeping up but the thoughts of most all with the exception of one are all in good taste. I literally write as I feel and I don't believe in division that I have been seeing done with regards to Canada but this has been a good exchange.

    ReplyDelete
  49. This bill discriminates against the healthy who are doing all the right things to stay healthy, and I believe that a person should be free to opt to pay as you go, but if we are to be compelled, we should pay into something that is not for someone else's profit---forced purchase is not what government should be about. A tax to pay for universal coverage, or just paying for health from the general fund is far fairer and equitable. What was passed today is an outrage!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Well it's getting late here and I a great evening to you there is a gain within all of this. This came on like a forum but with all respect that is where there is a gain.

I am going to head to bed here and I bid you a good eve...

    ReplyDelete
  51. The bill still has to go through the Senate.

    ReplyDelete
  52. at least now i can really afford to quit working...I can't afford to go to work and pay even more for health insurance I don't use

    ReplyDelete
  53. Why is that with this Bill Dana. Really mean it as last night it all really almost got very heated as you can see with one chap.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I thought it went from Congress through to the Senate. Val a good Sunday to you...

    ReplyDelete
  55. Jack, I will have to wait and see how this really affects the $450 a month I pay, for something I seldom use, and when I do I pay a 400 deductible and 25% of the bill...insurance company lawyers are working long hours to find the loopholes in this...and they will find plenty...

    ReplyDelete
  56. Ok as last night I was re posting Winnie the Pooh and then I got a "ping" with regards to this news. But even if it's changed and I think the major thing might be that there is something provided for people with no incomes - this does not fair out well as I see Dana.

To me even if there was less within it - I feel that it is one good step for the only industrialized country in the world to have this reformed and I am not Democrat nor Republican with my views.

Within all of this there was an exchange one was rather rude but I let it flow.....In Canada, we pay the second or third highest taxes within the world and our cheques earnings are taxed heavily.

So I don't entirely know all of the bill, but I know that it had cause some division and separation as everyone associated this with Canada - yet Canada has the same system as Australia, London, New Zealand, and so many others.

    What is the biggest beef?

    ReplyDelete
  57. I'm very pleased the House bill passed but I'm sure the biggest fight is yet to come. I have to wonder that when the Senate is finished with the bill will there be any real change?

    ReplyDelete
  58. Thanks as the intention here was anything but negative as well I am a dual citizen and came back to Western Canada nearly 9 years ago as my family had situations at the time - ie: Cancer.

Mike I don't know you but this is a first as to me the fact that it was passed and even if watered down. It's change and Obama may start to make moves internally with more things as I hoped for.

    Thanks man...

    ReplyDelete
  59. The only way a real "public option" can pass the Senate is through "reconciliation" which requires only 51% majority to pass. That's how Republicans and Bush passed the tax cuts for the wealthy. I hope Senate Dems' will push the health care legislation through the same way

    ReplyDelete
  60. I never wanted to mention the economy last night and how it got where it was and you are right on the mark Mike.

  63. if you have no money and can prove it they will defer the bill-

    ReplyDelete
  64. stupid to say the things you say to give someone a hard time rather sicko

    ReplyDelete
  65. people with no income are the biggest users of our health care now...and we pay for that with higher health insurance...my ex never works but takes her kids in constantly for free to get antibiotics for sniffles...I have to pay for my son to get a Kleenex...(I give him Oil of Oregano so he never gets sick anyway) but you see my point here...the only change will be we get taxed more to pay for the abuse by the lazy

    ReplyDelete
  66. lots of bs and yes nothing in life is free including health care but we need to make it more accesable and at least we have made a start

    ReplyDelete
  67. and what is not true...I have watched her do it for 6 years and i know dozens of other families that do ...and they never work..live on welfare and food stamps...and visit the clinic weekly with the kids in tow

the Oregano??...everyone in that house has had the flu in the last 30 days...but not him..not even the sniffles so he doesn't need Kleenex

    ReplyDelete
  68. turn her in lol- oregano oil is great-another one is echinacia really great take it and it works super

there are lot of those kind around i know use to work in a clinic for free for a while but it is the system and if they controlled that better it wouldn#t be quit so bad but no system is totaly free of this kind of stuff

    ReplyDelete
  69. You know I am not sure if this is causing more harm than good. For 8 years Bush did things that no other leader has in a civilized world and he never was impeached. Yet what he did - give much to think on.

And here there is more hate with Obama. I have to go but when we can see beyond our own country and look at others and really gain an understanding that is when the horizontal connects with the vertical....

Ironically, I have had a father that has been ill for 10 years and has has supreme medical attention and of recent for myself I was in an accident that most all know that are my friends and it all works here.

This is a good mix of thoughts....and we do gain from it all, I have to go as I have to be somewhere in 45 minutes but thereafter will be back as next week ironically without waiting I am having CTScans etc - something to think about secondly I do think there is a portion within the states that don't know anything outside of their scope, and then there are areas that due.

Just my thoughts as this really did become a forum debate and I don't think division between countries is the answer to the revolving problems within the reformation within the United States right now.

It's easy to say something but then to back it up is another - I can say that as I am a dual citizen.

Please do keep it all within respect....as last night there was one that literally "jumped" in here and defamed a great friend and Canada. Be well, and have a great morning or evening - off I am and peace to all.

This became a forum yet I think it's tremendous what all has been said as there is a gain within all of this - there was one person in here that I probably am going to delete as I don't believe that there needs to be a defamation of Doug or anyone else there is a large difference between giving ones thoughts in comparison to fighting. Within the thought process it almost becomes a "think tank" if you will.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Agree with you and what you have said. And Doug I literally think what this older chap said is defamation and it's very sad when this type of thing does take place.

  75. a little more info

The House passed H.R. 3962, called the "Affordable Health Care for America Act," in a 220 to 215 vote on Saturday night. Here's a look at some of the provisions in the $1.2 trillion dollar bill:

    # Creates a public health insurance option and a national exchange for the uninsured and small businesses to purchase health insurance. The Secretary of Health and Human Services would negotiate rates with doctors and hospitals on reimbursement rates.

    # The bill includes mandates for individuals to purchase and businesses to provide health insurance or pay a fine. Individual penalty is 2.5 percent of gross income unless they get a waiver. Businesses that don't offer insurance pay a fine equal to 8 percent of their payroll. Businesses with a payroll of less than $500,000 are exempt from the mandate.

    # Insurance companies are prohibited from denying coverage based on a pre-existing condition. There are caps on deductibles and annual out of pocket spending is capped at $5000.

    # Eliminates the Medicare doughnut hole over ten years.

    # Allows individuals up to 27-years-old to stay on their parent’s health insurance

    # Expands Medicaid from 100 percent to 150 percent of the Federal Poverty Level.

    # Provides tax subsidies for individuals between 150 and 400 percent (sliding scale) of the Federal Poverty Level. There are also tax subsidies for small businesses.

    # As amended, it prohibits federal funds from covering abortions. Women would need to purchase riders to insurance purchased on the exchange if they wanted that coverage.

    # The bill taxes individuals making more than $500,000 and $1 million for couples. It is a 5.4 percent tax.

    # Reduces overpayments to doctors who treat Medicare Advantage patients. It is estimated they are paid 14 percent more than doctors who treat Medicare patients.

    ReplyDelete
  79. It will cost more, fewer will receive coverage than now and the coverage itself will be worse - if it passes.
    .
Thankfully, our government has more checks and balances than just the house. This marxist concept still has to pass in the senate and those two very different bills will have to be rectified with one another. .
    .
And then ... IF is actually becomes the law of our Union of States - it will fail before the Supreme Court. It seems the wizzards of the far left have once again forgotten our US Constitution.

  80. sorry don't know where you get your info from but it is most certainly flawed- and I bet your news source is FOX News-

    ReplyDelete
  81. Indeed. You assume to much. Have you read the bill yourself? It is a train wreck and the vast bulk of its verbiage has little to do with health care.

It is a sad state when we've become so party biased that the facts aren't part of the debate, but rather the news source is. It wasn't all the many years ago that being liberal meant liberty minded and the enemy of liberty was an overwhelming government. How we got from there to hard left socialism is an amazingly sad story.
