Above the Law ?

Way back in 1977 the already well known movie director Roman Polanski fled the United States because he was charged with having sex with a 13 year old girl.

Polanski’s name first surfaced in my memory as the husband of actress Sharon Tate who was murdered in their home in 1968 by followers of Charles Manson. Polanski has been living in Switzerland, and living well by the sound of it, for all these years in his chalet in the Swiss Alps. The U.S. is trying to extradite him back to L.A. on the 32 year old charge and Polanski has been in jail in Switzerland while the Swiss authorities ponder whether to let the Americans have him. Now he’s been allowed, after he posted $4.5 million bail, to stay under house arrest in his chalet while he waits to find out what will happen to him. If he does have to return and face a trial, just watch the media circus begin.

There are already some Hollywood heavies who are saying that the poor 76 year old guy should be left alone and not prosecuted for something that happened so long ago. Most ordinary folks, including me, think otherwise. If nothing happens, it becomes another sad example of how fame and money can elevate someone to special status so that he or she can get away with things mere mortals can not.

These are areas in which I really find to be amazing with how sometimes things do work. That's if you ask me. I am nor ever have been a large fan of the media nor of all the news one sees. And really when it comes down to it no one should be able to be above the law if you ask me.

  2. It's amazing how this all works and I feel that everyone is truly equal.

  3. Well when one does something as such really I don't know how certain people as such can actually get off even a priest but
this is why I am not a large fan of news. I love the good news.

  4. I agree with you, he should have to stand trial and shouldn't get off because it's so many years later. He should get it for fleeing and eluding the law as well. I thought it happened in France though and that is where he went for the awards and they arrested him there?

  5. I forget where he was arrested but I read this and I thought it was a post as really do we live within a society where there are others that have the ability to break the law and till get away with it.

  6. In this country sometimes justice wins like in the case of Bernie Madoff however he is the first of the rich and famous who I've seen get what they really deserved. Then you have the entire Bush administration who thumbed their nose at our justice system, and everyone of them so far has gotten away it. There is no justice for all in this country

  7. Hi Mike I think it's in many different places there have been many Madoffs he was one that just was caught and here within Canada as well it's not perfect but needless to say it's ironic how one can be afforded by way of $$$$. We shall see what happens with him but again Justice is for All I believe but yet some in every country do get that allowance so it seems...

  8. money and status made no difference when he decided to lower himself just like any other common criminal. money should be no determining factor for doling out awards for victimization. the poor 76 yr old, evil guy should make retribution for what he has done. his few yrs left on earth will not compensate for his crime. he has lived a life time of wealth and luxury while some little girl probably spent her life confused and abused. he should be made to compensate this girl for her suffering and all criminals should be made to contribute back to society in some kind of way. punishment should always be conducive to the crime.

  9. as a director he is brilliant but movies are fantasy just as a 13 yr old girl was a fantasy----his brilliance in creating movie magic should never have crossed over into the real life of a child---there is no excuse not even the tragic murder of his wife and unborn son ------i have read where the victim has stated that she would rather not see the charges pressed after all of this time--that is the real tragedy---to reopen the wounds--to relive the nightmare--i am torn since i understand her need not to relive yet i fear the message that will be sent to others if there is no prosecution---the original sentence that he eluded was minimal--it is a legal issue it seems and lost in the legal is the nature of the crime-----one for solomon........

  10. he lives in france but you really don't want my coment lol

  11. @ peno_ then let those who have caused recompense to be held until this child no longer can stand the scrutinize of her fate, to compensate society as well. it is a pity, a catch-22 almost on her part. i would stand and hold her hand if i could that she would not feel alone, but let her remember she is not the only victim.

  12. i concur! no one should be above the law! either way, he'll eventually get his karma!

  13. We should all be above the law because the law is like the lowest standard. The law cannot force anyone to be good on the inside and yet that is what will build a better world, not laws nor punishment.

I believe settlement was made of this case between the parties involved a long time ago and forgiveness given by the woman. What good will punishing this man do now? It seems like some kind of vengeance to me.

  14. This man should be punished no matter what age he is now or whether he has fame and money , he did wrong in the eyes of the law and by doing so should be dealt with accordingly by the laws enforced .Because he is who he is and famous does not warrent leniancy, the media will of course have their pound of flesh and make money from this story and we as the public will read all about it , send him to prison , what is good for the goose is good for the gander .Rosie

  15. this woman has said she will not testify against him....what case do they have now except to prove they can extradite

  16. Go look up Brad Paisley's song "celebrity" on U Tube or CMT radio online. It pretty much says it all.

  17. The woman does not have to testify. He ran away from the US after pleading guilty to a lesser charge and after being being sentenced. This not about the rape anymore . It is about being a fugitive from the law. And he should pay for that.

  18. seem like living in Europe should be punishment enough

    ReplyDelete
  19. LOL I have no idea what living in Europe is like, maybe we better ask Heidi

  20. He is 76. The crime was commited in 1977. Its not that I am playing favorites here or whatever. And for me yeah ... no one should be above the law, whether he is rich or somebody in a position. Rape is rape. But maybe we should have considered [also] what kind of life these mother and daughter's having during those times. That's a big factor to consider Jack ... if there's really a rape.

Anyway, I don't know anything about these ... Hugs. maritess* ;)

  21. If there was a rape? drug a 14 year old, and even if she said yes.it was rape. that is beside the fact. I do not care how old he is, he is a fugative from the law and should go to jail.should Manson be let out of jail because he is old and he was the one that caused the murder of Polanski's wife and baby. The law is the law.

    ReplyDelete
  22. not even the same...Manson is mentally unstable...Polanski, however, and as pointed out by others here, is a brilliant talent and as far as those stated before , has contributed much to society..maybe he has served....or like you say, lock him up for the rest of his life and kill what else he might contribute

why don't we spend our resources on going after the current threats to the children...that is what I vote for

    ReplyDelete
  23. how has he made anyones life better by flaunting the laws of the land? its not like he cured cancer or prevented anything. making movies is not an art it a job.. if it was you, your ass would be in jail and no one would question it.I am sure you are more of a contribution to society than a fugitive from justice any day..

    ReplyDelete
  24. that's like saying writing a book is a job.....or Opra didn't contribute with her job

I didn't say he made anyone life better....but your right...we should spend lots of money and resources bringing him back to the states to die in a couple years and let some young rapist roam free for thoseyears

    ReplyDelete
  25. The guy ran...he's subject to the laws he broke while he lived in America. He needs to face a judge here. I guess if he didn't want to get caught, he should have stayed in France.

    ReplyDelete
  26. and for all those years we new exactly where he was and nothing was said or done...now why all of a sudden when he is almost dead do we go to exceedingly extreme measures to try to bring him back.....something else is going on here...he should have been kept here all along behind bars....the point now????

    ReplyDelete
  27. i agree he should have been behind bars way back when...
but ok i get it; if your rich, produce good movies, and brilliant enough to avoid conviction till your old, you can avoid penalty all together. we are better off spending funds, pouncing on the poor, not so smart, younger guys that will never contribute to the world of entertainment.
that's just a bit scary... and shady.

my beef is not that he should get prison time but that he has lived up his life till now carefree with no actual recompense of reward. he hasn't much more time to actually make himself responsible for contributing some of his brilliance in investing toward victim's. and the fact that he hasn't, proves the point that he should be `made responsible and penalized for his crime.

i carry this conviction toward all offenders so not just picking on poor old, brilliant, moneymaking, moraless, icons.

nothing personal against anyone posting either.., just venting. ;)

  28. I agree...but they let him live outside the law..now they want to make him pay?....too late...they should have done that years ago...the powers that be left him alone for a reason...it's too late to make him an example..arrest the ones that are raping tonight

    ReplyDelete
  29. He needs to pay for what he did, no matter how long it's been. Nobody is above God's law, for I do believe in what you sow, you reap, or what goes around, comes around, Karma & all that...

    ReplyDelete
  30. and your God will take care of that...very soon I am sure at his age...by the time they get him extradited he might be dead anyway....why waste time and resources?....oh..that is what our government does best isn't it

    ReplyDelete
  31. no one is above the law, no matter how long it takes, eventually they will be caught and justice will prevail in the long run.

    ReplyDelete
  32. you people keep me laughing....you turn you head to the child abuse in your neighborhoods to worry about some old fart in Europe

    ReplyDelete
  33. not so dad54 he just happens to be the topic of this post.
if you have any other bad guy to throw out there we'll spin on them too; because actually that's all we `can do from here. ;)

    ReplyDelete
  34. I agree - no one is above the law. I don't agree with dad, because a follow through, even at this late date, sends this message .

    ReplyDelete
  35. no one is above the law...I like that...so tell me why they let him live over there peacefully till he became an invalid...and now they want to drag him back...they could have frozen his assets and made him regret it all along...the powers that are trying to bring him back now let him live easy for years...ask yourself why

  36. Amazed in reading this as I have not been on here for four days however in no manner do I see this as correct at all. Just my own two cents.
