My grandmother from my mother's side had came here to Canada from Budapest along with her brothers all four of them. I will see later if I can get a scanner and post these letters. The letters where sent from Italy to my grand mother she would wait each day to see what came. There is only one brother that did not go as during the war within Canada there has never been a draft all the men during that time enlisted as they just thought within that kind of way. All three of them died in Italy and the very last one I remember reading was from one brother describing how he loved the italian culture and the writings were so well wrote. I guess back then they didn't have anything else other than to deal with the war - as this was during the time of WW1. When my father retired from Norad and what he did, I was living in a small town named Yorkton, Saskatchewan. And I will never forget it as after my grandfather had passed away, she was all alone and ironically most all that had lived there and around her never really did that much for her. So I would stop to go in and visit here and she would never stop talking - a very soft spoken elder women she was but when she started talking about one subject such as her brothers, I would sit next to her and how often she would talk about all that they did and then go and get the news articles and pictures of them. She of all my grand parents I think I knew the most as all the times before she passed away - I loved to just go in and give her company and the story of here three brothers is one that I don't have at my hand right now but when you read it you could feel the times in which they were facing.
All three were in WW1 and they were within the Canadian Army as there was no Air Force at that time.

ReplyDeleteI have been looking high and low for a few saved pictures on discs but that will have to wait...
ReplyDeleteTake your time ...
ReplyDeleteWars were a different deal then and somehow when I compare, I look at their courage and think, we really have no clue about what courage is.
ReplyDeleteyou have some great nostalgic items from your family to pass on, that is great to be able to have heard firsthand from your grandma and then to have the letters as well
ReplyDeleteAlthough there is much sadness involved having the letters and photos is something that can be held on to and treasured and passed down with much care..
ReplyDeleteUntil a person has been within a war or involved within it - I think it's the ultimate area of doing. I really believe in peace, at the same time there will always be some form of wars that go on in the world. But that all said, I truly believe that those that have went and enlisted for the sake of safety and freedom is really the highest form of integrity.
ReplyDeleteAs it's not about killing, it's more about saving life and preserving peace.
On my grandmothers side certainly as the letters in which I don't have a scanner but they are something that is rather special to say the least but all at that time never thought of anything but to defend and preserve freedom as they had just come to a new land.
ReplyDeleteCheryl I can say that one does not want to dwell to much on this area but at the same time it's something that each one of us do treasure - those that have had relatives and or some connect with family that has been within a war or a part of peacekeeping. Yeah.
