In 2009 it is just as important as it ever was to honour the memory of those who fell in past and present conflicts. I believe regardless of age but especially our understanding of the significance and the meaning of November 11th, the hour of 11am in particular.
It was at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in the year 1918 that the guns fell silent to end what has been called the “Great War”. To this day, we observe this time to remember those who fell in World Wars 1 and 11, as well as Korea, and right up to today’s conflict in Afghanistan.
There is so much one could write with regards to this but in addition to this we should not forget that the people and society of Germany. Most during this time did not realize all that was going on. In the aftermath of it all most that had lived during this time were as surprised as the rest of the world of what had taken place under the dictator of a leader by the name of Hitler.
There are so many things one could write on this but the most important thing is to pay tribute to those in all times of war that have provided our freedoms. I believe everyone in there own way has a special memory regardless of where they live on this globe.
Throughout Tuesday I am sure many will have their own precious stories from which they write with regard to what the meaning of November 11th... We cherish what is rather that isn't as it's a very small world that we have come to gain from during the past and within the present.
I remember the late 60's here in WVa particularly 68, 69, 70 the "draft" was at it's peak many of my friends were high school drops outs and their response to the letter was " I guess they saved me to trouble of enlisting. Some of them never came back home but I remember each of them. Especially on Nov 11
ReplyDeleteMike this morning before I left, I read your blog and it was tremendous. I don't recall this time myself but by way of family I have. But all around the world I think we all have a memory of this time by way of relatives, friends, and so forth.
ReplyDeleteI think that what is most important is that our youth do not forget the history that made and gave us our freedoms. By the way you have an excellent blog there.
Everything that happened during the wars should be inculcated in the hearts of our youth by way of History books, for them to be able to realized how our relatives, and friends fought for us to have this kind of freedom. A very nice writes Jack.
ReplyDeleteTess it's a time that we do remember and I do hope that history is never lost especially from generation to generation. We do realize and hopefully we don't forget. I am sure that we won't as it does seem that the youth of today are taught more which is good.
ReplyDeleteTo remember and honor is good
ReplyDeleteYeah it is...but there is something good within it as well. As I did write much on this and I didnt have the time but we all offline in our own ways do pay tribute as well. If you know what I mean...
ReplyDeleteThanks for the post Jack.Remembering all the wars is a good thing. The fight for freedom is costly and i honor and respect all who have given their lives for that freedom.
ReplyDeleteI look forward to tomorrow morning! And it's something that people still do have that ethic and regard those whom have served and given allowance for our very freedoms that so often we forget.
ReplyDeleteWe have not forgotten from what I have read all over this eve.
