How we used to cut the lawns and tend to all the things that as children we do it’s something that I recall as there was so much fun as there was nothing we would presume – just doing it and without the thought of anything more. Out in shorts and seeing how many bees we could catch in a jar without being stung – there were all ten of us kids that at around the age of five we would just embark within the morning and come back with so many stories.
We did not have all that much but we enjoy every little thing that we were doing even though it really would not mean all that much. All would go back into the undeveloped area of land and come back with stories of how many snakes we saw or and then all would count up to see how many bees.
After it all there was a yell from Kip’s mother that was a rather large mother – she was, and within the entire neighborhood you could hear her holler everyone within what was known as Hiller Heights knew what who’s voice that was.
Then thereafter lunch we would all gather around and think of the next excursion to do, how often we would climb up Weeping Willows that were so large that by they time we got up there it took us have a day to get back down.
As we had a total of some 30 trees there was a hammock as well as a swing. Now and then everyone sat on that swing. The swing weathered the storms of the winter as well as the great times of the summer. Now and then there were strong winds but the swing weather the storms and was always there as you could see it as a child from your bedroom when you gazed out in the backyard at night.
The swing seemingly withstood nature as well as serviced many during the three seasons of the year.
what a treasure
ReplyDeleteI love writing...and that was with regards to not the swing you see there but one that I recall fondly as a child....
ReplyDeleteReminds me of when I was growing up as a kid.We had a swing that was hung from the tallest and strongest branches. Good post Jack, thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteGoing back in time yeah it's something that is something that I do now and then but if I have literally a picture from which to work with I get into that groove.
ReplyDeleteMy swing was in Grandma's maple tree next door. What a great memory of childhood. I often wondered if I would be able to swing high enough to do a loop and wrap the rope around the branch (no...it never did happen, but I thought about it a lot!!!)
ReplyDeleteGood one, my reference was back on the east in a place called Syracuse. Mind you to come to think of it I probably did fall off the swing now and then...:)
ReplyDeleteYou have a very nice blog to say the least!
How can boys be so like girls....????
ReplyDeleteMy sister and our friends spent hours outside in the bushes beyond our house, and we learned so much about tadpoles and physics (off swinging ropes).....I wish my grandkids could have this freedom to leave the home/house for hours and not be followed by adults. We had one place where we used to strip to our underpants to pretend to be Tarzan .........we would be gone most of the day with no supervisioin.....it is a sad commentary on modern life that kids don't get to spend time in the woods learning about themselves... and thinking about their world....unsupervised and with the time to analyze and think...now we call it MEDITATION.
How true Krunn, I was in a small midwestern town where there were fields and woods and you could sneak down to the river. Hours of time exploring, as long as we were within sight of the house by dark. Those were the days. Nostalgic write there, Jack.
ReplyDeleteSmiling Karyn as kids we were but we all just did different things till puberty set in.
ReplyDeleteReading all you said I know what you mean big time I think maybe the reason is that we never pre - assumed anything as children. That might be it....lol good story underpants and all - hope your enjoying you trek back...
Well just a write I looked at all the pictures and now I am looking at what has I have today and it's reminicent as there was no fiction within it :)
ReplyDeleteWe lived in Jersey City and in my backyard we had a swing set, a peach tree, a cherry tree and a screened in room which was home to a bunch of Daddy Long Legs. My first chore was scraping out the grits pot then as I got older Grandma would send me to shop for that night's meal. I also did mopping, waxing, and wash/setting her hair. I enjoyed errands. I cooked my first meal in Grammar School.
ReplyDeleteThat swing reminds me of my grandfather :) he made us a swing just like that . I still love to spend time in a hammock - we have one under a macadamia nut tree, out by the pool :)
ReplyDeleteIt's all good...as each within our own ways we had one of those things within the past I am sure we all do now and then.
ReplyDeleteIf nobody's watching I still slip on a swing! ;-P
ReplyDeleteMe too shhh ok! :)
ReplyDeleteLOL!
