Yep, our lack of graves, accents and umlauts has the world in a spin. A good example of why English is such a difficult tongue.
ReplyDeleteYeah it's something as it's a mix of many different languages. However it my first language and it's rather interesting how it all came about...
ReplyDeleteThe etymology of English goes back into our rather strange history --- it's a bastard language, begot of French, Saxon, Danish invaders and ancient celtic languages flavoured with Latin. A very complicated brew, you might say.
ReplyDeleteRight?! er...right?
ReplyDeleteYet it's the language we both learned as a first - I would think that you come from where it all formed which is cool, and I learned it as a first but I had this from my old blog and I have been finding some of the posts from back then to be of most interest to me know - oops I mean now. :)
ReplyDeleteYes it's a complicated brew of sorts - fortunate for many it's the international language of the world and most all other countries that are not english speaking - are taught English as a primary language. The ancient celtic - wow that is a conjure of linguistics that are something that one really is complicated. It came to mind as yesterday while I was shopping I ran into some people right from London, and they have lived here for three years and had family that just arrived for the first time. The first thing we both noticed - in the store the beatles were playing and we had to laugh and then we talked on England and I found it most interesting.
Write.....or Right - :) Gotcha! Just joking...wit can be a good thing at times or at the write time (oops)...
ReplyDeleteG'day Jack,
ReplyDeleteI just love it, have you ever read Bill Bryson's "Mother Tongue"? explains how it all came about in the most delightfully funny way,
I can't say I have.
ReplyDeleteI I had the time I would love to study the origin of languages. What a heavy undertaking though - a bit like studying religions............
ReplyDeleteI really don't have the time myself - but within my family I had one member that read and read. And today I went to the bookstore I did not pic up a typical book, but there is only so much time in the day and I find that it's most interesting to see all the other different thoughts.
ReplyDelete@ Dismalscientist... you said it all..lol. We have so many languages within our language... My first language was Spanish, I don't know much of it anymore, but in learning English from there was a total trip..:-)
ReplyDeleteWhen I think about the English language, I always recall this Mother Goose nursery rhyme
ReplyDeletePeter Piper
Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers,
A peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked.
If Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers,
How many pickled peppers did Peter Piper pick? or (Where's the peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked?)
My mother tongue is French and I only started learning and speaking English in my teens. I don't think I will ever write or speak English the way I would really like. For me, learning English is still a work in progress.
I am smiling here Lise I knew French so well, and then as time went on and after being out of school and never being able to speak it frequently - I lost it but the funny thing is that I will conjugate french with spanish as even my spanish has become very lame. Were I had honors in the French language, and then I never had the ability to keep it as well as it could be. Secondly if it was not for French I would have never learned spanish as for some reason when I was really immersed within it, French helped me slowly come to understand and speak it. Not perfectly but I could have a good conversation. Languages are great and what goes with it.
