The snowshoe hare and the white tailed jack rabbit are the two species of hare, and the cottontail is the only species of wild rabbit found in Alberta. Rabbits and hares are mainly nocturnal in their habits.
Pikas look more like guinea pigs than rabbits or hares. Yet, they have the same tooth and skull structure as the latter, which places them firmly in the Order Lagomorpha. Pikas have short, rounded ears, and short legs. They are diurnal in activity and can often be seen in an alpine rock slide.
Lagomorphs do not hibernate, and must spend the winter searching for food. The pika is the only lagomorph to store food in the summer for use in the winter.
This video was taken as I did not expect one of two that have been coming out to eat two carrots that I place out for them every night for the past four days. I tried my best to get them on video, but you might see what they look like. In the summer they are completely brown and then now they are white. Darwin was not wrong on mutations. And the legs this one is something too see as they can jump over a fence with out any problems.
I know I am spoiling them rotten, but it's only two of them that have the secret to where the carrot comes from.
G'day Jack,
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful, it gives one satisfaction and a sense of wonder to watch them & as they get to know they are safe you might find you are feeding a colony believe me I know, we now have dozens living here, a farmers nightmare but my pleasure lol
LOL - now these two seem to be rather smart in that they have not passed on the message to the other ones. And last spring I saw all these wild ones going through that mating process the entire neighborhood was surrounded by them running back, and jumping forth!
ReplyDeleteCould you see it to some extend - the video that is?
ReplyDeleteyes I saw the cheeky Rabbit snatch & grab, in the beginning of the vidio
ReplyDeleteok lol...
ReplyDeletethat is me making those sounds - for some reason I think they understand it better than "hello", "hello"...
ReplyDeleteYou might be right there. I always make a similar sound to the squirrels to come and eat the peanuts I put out for them. I did see the furball run by. I LOVE rabbits.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was a young boy in Syracuse, NY, I had been playing with my friends and then one of the neighbor tom cats had a small baby wild rabbit. We where playing a game on my friend Rick's yard and I grabbed and screwed off the rack, so I just had the stick. Then I pointed and threw the stick to this tomcat. She dropped the wild baby rabbit and not kidding we kept the rabbit till it got to a point of being ready to be released back out in the wilderness.
ReplyDeleteIt's not the same kind of rabbits as out here, but I was on the phone talking to my father this morning at 9am. And he recalled that all so much.
Ironically there are somethings that we share alike within the people that we have lived with. My father had a private office in what is known as the Bessborough. He found a bat (of all things) and he kept it in his office till it was well enough to go one.
They know where their goods are coming from of course they are coming back but that's good..I love to do things like that too! I have a bird feeder on my balcony and I love to see the birds come and eat the food I set out and sometimes I will go and drink my coffee on the balcony and watch them go inside the feeder and eat..Makes me smile and appreicate life and to see that I feed a hungry bird today..
ReplyDeleteWe also see squirrels around here and I was getting groceries in one day and a squirrel captured my attention..I thought he is gathering food for the winter and running up the tree and back down..Im gathering groceries for my house too..it was a great concept to see him and I doing the same thing..I sit sometimes on my balcony and watch the squirrels and birds trying to gather food..I love it!
Thanks for the video.. I saw the rabbit snatch and grab...so cute!
You have a nice voice Jack..you should do voice lending on TV! Seriously!
It's so interesting as last night, I knew there was a time to take maybe some more time but we shall see what happens Cyn. We have no snow here at all but it's starting to get cold. They are cute these two. Yet they are wild but it so interesting.
ReplyDeleteMy voice, I know that I have been told several times that I should do something with it but I don't wish to be a disc jockey - I was while I was going thru my first two years of university. What I would love is to have one of my songs submitted to some station or studio. I am realistic, and today is a Monday, and I find that it's Tuesday when I really start to get on with things.
I lost my position unfortunately - but I have to think about really what I wish to do, meanwhile tomorrow I will be meeting and submitting and then there after I will be leaving for Calgary I think. Yet I am planning it all out.
Your serious? I mean my voice does come across that way?
Yes it does..very nice deep voice. You should seriously look into it.
ReplyDeleteHave a safe trip and come back to us!
Today I am sending out my resume and there after I am taking it from there.
ReplyDeleteFor the amount of people that have mentioned this Sue which seems to be online and offline.
I was told last week that I should consider something in an avenue that fits me.
I have the momentum, but Monday's are the days that I do my research and there after I send out my resume.
