These Wild Rabbit Friends

I have my home that is at the end of the western area of development in Edmonton. I did think I was going to get a good take on one of these two friends of mine, but I must have placed zoom on and it did not come out as well as I wished.

Then again I should wait a few days and I enjoy the bonding with these two. They are wild rabbits and there feet are not typical to the ordinary domesticated rabbits. Each night I place out two carrots for these two. I have yet to name them as I know they don't hibernate. But I do know that food means something. For the past four days I will or I think I am talking to them by doing a certain sound to them, but I think that in some manner we have a connection as we are gaining trust.

At first the carrots were placed outside of the fence and now it's in the yard. Slowly but surely I may have a " Tom and Jerry " on my hands waiting at the back door. As it's obvious too see the trust is starting to develop.

The other one was there and I came back in and got my camera thinking that "oh yeah Jack you have it now". But the rascal just took off like the other. But as you can see they are wild and yet they are returning everyday. My measurement is that ever evening I have to place another two carrots...

  1. Nice to make friends with wild animals. Be careful don't grab -rabbits have strong teeth and a nasty bite. I would give a bit less to make them look forward for more but up to you.

I'm sure others are eating this too.

  2. Glad you are making friends with two wild rabbits. I think your procedure is good. You have to go slowly and bring them closer a little bit at a time to build their trust. Can't wait to see the photos.

  3. These two know where they have food. No one here is feeding them - only myself. And for only these two "had" I am enjoying it at night....but I know not to get too close they are wild, but somehow these two really do think for themselves. There was one night I was out there and both seem to be looking at me with sideways. So in the evening it's something fun...

I am sure they are eating anything they can get there paws on - but carrots would be a delicacy...: )

  4. I think it will be a little more time as it's really a game of when.....Quando.
So I think I will come back to them in a little time but after I was researching the different types of wild rabbits and the one here - I forget the name, but they have large back legs (very larger) and very long ears.
I think in two weeks I will have created something with them. I think that by making a certain sound they understand me. For they could we looking and thinking "this guy is nuts" but at least we have food! :)

  5. G'day Jack,
the long back legs would suggest to me they are hares (well thats what we call them), if yu ever get close enough check out if they have the divided front lip as that is their trade mark here,

  8. Nice to have some furry friends Jack. They will become tamer in time as the trust grows ( as you said) Pretty skittish to start with I know, because I guess they are chased out of other homes because of the damage they do to the gardens. They will love having a friend for a change. I think you are right, those long back legs indicate they are from the Hare family. Hugs
