An Accident the Morning...

Well today was something as this morning I was en route to a meeting I had downtown. While I was approaching from a distance of about 300 yards to this four way stop you could hear this sound which the best way I can describe the sound was that it sounded like a THUD.

When I came to a stop so fast this young student on a bike collided with a car. The car was turning properly with a green light and apparently this young man of the age of around 20 years of age - I guess was either not paying attention or just trying to make the lights before they changed.

When I arrived closer everything seemed to go into auto pilot. As it's one thing for a collision but a car colliding with a body is rather alarming. How things can happen so fast within a milli second of so it seemed. I pulled over then I could see that here was a this young man that was on a bike had been hit by a car. It's really hard to describe in words - how it all happened so fast. There were others right there which were waiting at the bus terminal yet everyone seemingly went into shock.

There was a lady, the driver of the car and this young man which had moved over to a bench. The young man seemed to be alright yet with the sound of the impact no one really knew if he had harmed himself or not. Ironically everyone was in shock I think and no one knew what to do. Then there came another person whom started to talk to him and I indicated that the best thing would be if he would lay on the grass and just relax. No one was doing anything yet and then I looked over to were I had parked over with my car as my cellular was within it. I made the request to all that if it was possible to place the young man on the grass even though he looked fine I would run and make a call. Still everyone was within shock. There was a parking lot right next this this area just a few feet. I ran over to this one man as it was closer than my car and he knew as quickly as I did the need to call 911. He handed me his cell and I called and then went back to the location and still everyone seemed to be in a shock. The driver of the car was stressed out as heck. Still no one wished to do anything but this other gentleman called again and then within five minutes the paramedics arrived.

Thereafter I left as I had one meeting which I had to make but within the early portion of the morning this was certainly worth a couple cups of coffee. I don't know how things went and I hope that all. I thought that there were enough people there to give the police there own stories as I didn't catch it all - yet I did hear the sound and then the sight of a car and a young man down which was on a bike. Seemingly it all happened within seconds. Everyone was concerned yet with the exception of a few everyone seemed in some sort of trance as everyone had a cell phone on them but no one made the call.

The young man looked ok yet that didn't mean he was ok and within five minutes the medics arrived. When they arrived there were more that were right there which had witnessed the entire accident. As soon as the medics arrived I felt that all things were in good hands and as I didn't witness the accident I carried on and made the appointment which I had but it does ex amplify how on the first day of school as well within the hustle and rush within the morning. This was something which might not have taken place if people where not within such a rush.

I hope both the driver as well as the presumed student which was on the bike are alright. Yet it seemed to all happen within a milli second.

  1. Wow - what a start to the day. Glad you weren't involved in the actual accident. Not happy it was someone else either. I do hope and pray myself that those people are ok. I think the rest of their week at least will be difficult. Hopefully they will bounce back quickly to there respective lives.

It is amazing how people just freeze. Glad you thought to call the medics. Things do seem to happen so so fast in these types of events.

  2. This other man that had just parked his car seemed to be the only other one which knew what need to be done as most everyone else that were right there on the corner seemed to be in shock. The responce after the call was right on the mark. These people didnt mean anything wrong but they were within that freeze or a sort of shock.

  3. I, too, am glad you were only an off-hand witness. It is a shock to see an accident occur, and responses slow down afterward due to shock. Imagine what our soldiers see, and how they must react.

  4. I think that was to my advantage as I was just coming up to it all. Soldiers they are trained as well as all first responders but even some of them have had a hard time after it all - PTSD. Yet this was within the first day of school commencing combined with that rush factor within the morning of all kind of drivers Grammy.

  5. It certainly does make one 'wake up' for a while and concentrate. Sounds like it wasn't too bad an outcome. You did all you could do and moved on. No point in hanging around gawking like a lot of people do.

  6. You did the right thing Jack, by placing the 911 call. Sometimes people freeze-up in situations like this. You stayed calm, and stayed there til help arrived. Praying everyone is ok. Yes, we all need to slow down especially right now, with the start of school just beginning.

  7. Summers I never witnessed it yet the sound I did hear and hopefully all are fine. In this case there was around five people just looking. Then there were some talking to the young man and I just went about things after - but it was the strangest thing to see within the morning. I feel that the young man might have been the one which had made the mistake in trying to beat the lights as the driver mentioned what happened and he was shaking like you wouldnt believe but I am sure it all settled. Not a typical morning but the rest went well..

  8. Anyone would have what amazed me was that no one was making that call...it's a combination of the rush of the morning and now the first day of school here. Yet accidents do happen but some are not necessary.

  9. Thankful you were not the one involved in the accidents. Reading your title at first gave me the thoughts you're the one, i paused first ... thank God you're not.
Anyways, that 'stop' and 'go' lights really really has something to do with traffic accidentson the road. I hope the motorists would realized to put effort in themselves to follow immaculately the traffic lights and road signs.

  10. Does sound to me like you did everything right Jack. The problem is--and I don't exclude myself--is that people at that time of day are running through their heads what they are going to be doing later at work or at meetings or seeing somebody at lunch, etc. Their minds slip away from the task at hand, watching the road.

It sounds like you and this other fellow brought some needed experience. I was a sadly predictable but hardly necessary accident.

  11. Like you said Jack, there were enough witnesses. Calling 911 was the best thing you could do.

  12. So true Doug, I had an accident back two years ago yet I was not in a rush and since that time I do plan my time yet accidents do happen - yet this other gent was already parking at his workplace I presume.
I was not within the realm so I think that I just was not within this shock that these others were.
Yet there is that hustle and bustle and the need to get their so fast.

  13. I find more often than not there is that rush factor and that combined with the first day of school here yet that the morning and so be it.

  18. Nothing worse than a crowd of onlookers that do nothing! It was a blessing that you came by.

  19. How terrible. It doesn't sound like the man on the bike was seriously hurt but you can't be sure. You did the right thing.
Last summer something like that happened. I didn't see the accident but someone else did and said the biker shot straight up into the air.
No one knew the fate of the biker and it was at the worst part of the day. Danforth ave where it happened was congested from lots of afternoon traffic. It was a mess.
I was a bit worried that it could have been my son so I rushed to a phone booth to make sure it wasn't him. He was okay and I was much relieved.
My heart goes out to that person and to the one you witnessed being hit by a car.
    Blessings~

  20. Glad you had your senses to make the call. Your right, sometimes people go into shock and don't even think to call 911. Hope the kid is ok...

  21. A day later here Julie I am sure it all worked out...

  22. Frani that was my feel yet they all just looked rather than doing anything.
Yet in retrospect I think it all was faster than what it seemed but then I don't think so.

  23. This was the thing everyone thought he looked fine. In most cases one is on an adrenaline rush or shock when
an impact as such happens Ericka. This had no mess yet who was to know what trauma or even if so had
    happened internally.

which I think was a university student within his first year is ok...
