If we are to practice living life with intention, purpose, and appreciation, we are called to take stock — on every level imaginable — material, mental, emotional, and spiritual. And we feel the need to evaluate everything in terms of its value to us. Do our belongings, attitudes, ideas, obligations, commitments, habits, goals, dreams, relationships, and wardrobes still fit us? Do they suit our current way of life? Are they flattering? Do they please us? Do they continue to serve us?
Do they feed us what we need? Or do they drain our energy and slow us down by the amount of maintenance that they require?
It seems to me that we spend the first half of our lives accumulating things and the second half getting rid of them.
At some point in our middle years, it is important to take the time to catalogue what it is we have, what we have accumulated, what we hold onto, what we have carried with us through the years, and what we would be better of letting go of. As we face the second half of our lives, it is prime time to check our baggage and lighten up our load…. as I have done as of recent.
With practice, we can distinguish which of our possessions and commitments expresses our true desires, needs, values, and which do not. Which relationships serve us in a reciprocal/learning manner, and which do not.
Fulfillment within writing is never an absolute, however it's a gain and then some.
I agree, prioritize with your belongings and your goals.
ReplyDeleteYes, but in a positive methodical manner. I feel. And a great morning to ya Lynn. I think we are going to be hotter than you today - not kidding - that is a first :)
ReplyDeleteI like this
ReplyDeleteEliz, what people mistake for the high cost of living is really the cost of living high...:)
ReplyDeleteHmm..well I don't have much "stuff" and what I do have has been ruined by my kids. (the stuff is old) So I guess this doesn't apply to me, I'd like to get rid of it all and start new
ReplyDeleteWhy not? Material things do not replace the value of life - this is not a religious overtone - it's merely what is the foundation of creating within life. Secondly, your children will grow up to be very proud of you and in time I think you will see that comes to prevail. Gosh I am sounding philosophical - but life is that path, that way, without any ponder of what others do say. As I know that I have had my own challenges as well. But we flow in life and do what we deem as sensible and enjoyable.
