Sunday it was – Easter Sunday. I knew it was Easter yet what I thought was that I would head over to my folks and as it is my sister took them out to mass. Often I do tend to several of their things but within opted to fixing and preparing their place as spring is here. Dust galore. When to top of cupboards and ceiling fans are…well lets just say there was more dust than I expected. Thinking I would be a good Samaritan tending to some of these things. It wasn’t what I thought it would be. I remember this question that was asked of Woody Allen. He was asked if he thought that sex was dirty. His response was if it's done right it is.
But hey this was dirty at it’s best. They won’t probably come to realize till tomorrow if at all but at least their place is in much better order. I wouldn’t say I am the handiest. However when you couple misplaced tools and several areas that were in need of repair I can assure you handy come to take on a new meaning. It was finding things before repairing things. Sure I can fix simple things but I am by no means one that knows the likes of many whom can fix nearly everything when it comes to this area. Yet the basics have always worked for me. As time goes on they this reflex to look in the telephone book and just call and pay for things that the ordinary person could. I’m not saying they are taken advantage of – well yeah I guess so pending on whom they get.
My brain wave during this Easter Sunday was to dedicate a good portion of the day cleaning up their place. Mind you from the ceiling fan, to a few taps as well as this freezer that really needs an entire overhaul. It is a task onto it's own. I know why they have such hard time breathing. There was so much dust that now I know why they are having troubles with breathing. So I guess I came to be the sanitizer as well. Yes they do get older, but rather than pay money out to contractors to do this and that. I thought it would be good to just get in there and get it all done. Obviously they would not recognize it at first but I am sure that upon their return they had a fine time and I was just finishing up with those odd jobs that certainly can be done from within the family.
Finding a ladder, screwdriver, even a wrench. My father always had things organized. For some reason everything was all over the place. For that matter when I got started everything and everywhere was like hunting for Easter Eggs as I recall as a kid. Where did they place all these things I asked myself? Did they have a garage sale over the winter? I was able to find a few things and I was able to get even all their sinks and this fan within one bathroom that buzzed, all it needed was some. My father has never been one that has gone to mass within the longest he was raised united. Nor my mother and she was catholic and the foundation of my up bring was that of a catholic.
Knowing full well my older sister would be adamant that they attended mass with her. Wouldn’t you know, they dressed up and went as well as they enjoyed an outing with an Easter supper. I never attended mass nor did I go out for Easter supper, but this allowed me the time without “family supervisors” you know they are looking up and telling you what to do while your doing it. It was nice to get in and out of there and not have the trivia of spring cleaning and doing that fixer up thing.
Thereafter I arrived home and I looked at my own things and thought this was enough for today. The weather was great one that I thought would be just a one hour job, yet I did know that they have been letting things go over the past winter. By now means am I perfect but I thought that this was a fine deed to be done for those whom brought myself into this world.
Not too long ago they celebrated their 50th Anniversary so all considered with Easter and spring it seemed to be the more appropriate to do now. More than likely, within a few days I shall receive a call if not sometime tomorrow saying thanks. But I don’t think they shall realize all that was done till they start looking into cupboards and other areas and realizing that there is no buzz to a bathroom fan, nor will there be one light within one of there closets that rarely works. Come to think of it they do have a nice place meaning it looks nice, yet underneath it all (no pun intended) this was a more than I intended on taking on but one you get started. You might as well finish the job. In this part of Canada which I reside one of the predominate ethnicities is comprised of Ukrainian descendants.
Hence the meaning within of Easter within Ukrainian is “Great Day”.
That is what happens when people get old, is that the chores get harder and harder to do. They are likely not even going to notice because they are getting more senile as the years go on. It is a sad fact of life. My own mother is going to be eighty-five this May.
ReplyDeleteShe can't keep up with the work but she is super organized because she has notes all over the place. She has a place for everything other wise she might forget where it is. I realized that having a place for something really helps to keep stuff organized.
If someone takes the nail clippers from the bathroom no one can find them. But, if they are kept in the bathroom the whole family can use them when they need them.
Sometimes, the clutter can get the better of a person. I hate looking for screwdrivers in our house. They are either lent out and not returned or they are under a pile of junk.
Small apartments tend to clutter, especially because there isn't enough cupboard space.
:)
They have a decent place but the key is to get in there Erika when they are out. All in all it, for Easter I did what I deemed fitting and regardless of
ReplyDeletehow dusty the place was little do they know most all of it now has been done. Yet it was encounters of a family kind.
I am glad for you that your heart led you to do some service today. Serving our parents is rewarding even if not immediately noticed. We have to find the reward within ourselves, knowing we did something nice for another person or people. Good for you!!!
ReplyDelete"that I thought would be just a one hour job" snort of laughter :-)))
ReplyDeleteI really appreciate a fix-it person. If they don't say anything, it might be because we tend to notice more when things don't work than when they do. That is really a good deed on your part, in my humble opinion.
Jack ... am laughing here. No offense meant please. It is just that my front garden and back is in total dis-array because of my two dogs and my two Avocado trees are shedding their leaves and my Apple-guava tree also. And i have no time cleaning them. And the lady who's supposed to come to clean it didn't come. gosh ...
ReplyDeleteAnyways, your such a good and kind son. And a lovable too ... imagine, Mr. Jack fixing things around the house. Can you come and fix my garden faucet. smiles* kiddo' :)
what a good son you are Jack, I have done the same with my mother in laws home, she cant see the dust so she does not realize how bad it gets, in
ReplyDeleteArizona you can dust and in five minutes its back, damn sand I guess.....lol
You are a good son Jack! I'm glad you realized when it was time to stop for the day. I think you could teach my daughter something about dusting. I hate to dust, I think it might be because that was my job when I was a child ever since I can remember.....dusting the rungs on the dining room chairs, I guess mom didn't want to bend over or something. lol
ReplyDeleteIt was a good day and the reward most definitely is within oneself...yet it's abundant in what one does and how one does for others.
ReplyDelete(I had to place that remark with satire with regards to Woody Allen) :)
Yeah when I started I thought it would be an hour but no it came to be three hours :)
ReplyDeleteThus it was DJ.
I have to get my own place done! :)
ReplyDeletePamela it's the same here. This is the driest places. There is not much of a humidity. I have no complaints as this is that time now. Yet
ReplyDeleteafter one week one does need to truly do a clean up with dust. Over the winter, what I came to see was many things which were left to go.
Now that is not there fault but at least now most all is nearly done. I shall go back there this weekend and finish off the "leftovers".
I never thought of them like that though. Yet it's a management but for Easter it was of worth.
The drains....Nancy I literally opened them all up and how much film was in there. It was much more than just dust but it's now all clean.
ReplyDeleteSo most all things are within order there for them nearly.
