Well my story today was one of worth. Some may know and some might not know that I started an art form called Aikido when I was 13 years of age and I have carried on with it and then I stopped as one does get busy or has things that do come up. First started Aikido in Syracuse, N.Y. My mentor I have kept in contact with as he move to Cincinnati and well that is a long story within itself. But I came into a town in Canada and was the first instructor of Aikido at the age of 17. I had had the privilege to learn by some of the most unique Shihans (masters) from Japan. So today I had left off within the morning with the idea that I would head of and do something with this friend of mine which took place later - but then I could see that within this small dojo (school) there was something taking place. Little did I know that there was a Shihan that was about to come in and do a seminar.
I sat there as I know the instructor here and I took a few picture and sat in what you call Seiza - and before you know it here comes in this old master from the West Coast. He was Japanese and before he started the instructor introduce me to him. I know the culture all to well and have taught the art for some 20 years. So....
We talked and he wanted me to come back at 1:00pm, and I didn't wish to put off my other plan so what I did - what I took one of my Bokkens and I called and went over to a very re known Shihan (master) of Kendo. He as well is Japanese and I asked him if he could write a message to this Aikido Shihan. Both men are of the same age near about 70. And the letter was wrote as I told Ken what I wished to say. He smiled and I had not seen Ken in three years. But he knew me all too well as I used to teach here for a period of time as well I have practice at one point within Ken's Kendo Dojo. So...
It all went well, Ken's wife asked me from my telephone number as well as my email and she took me aside and told me that both of these older Japanese gentleman were the best of friends! Coincidence...
I ended up going back to the Seminar and I had the time to talk with this Shihan as he knew all the people that I knew and the intention of the letter with respect and within Japanese was to express my gratitude as well as that I would like to teach a class one day a month. So we shall see - as when I first arrived as when I did in a city called Edmonton it all just comes back to one. I suppose it's like riding a bike and there are things that you never forget. So....
My intention is that there will be another class tomorrow and I hope that I will receive a call or an email which shall allow me to do so. There were more pictures taken but they insisted that I don't take any of the seminar as this is something rare - so that was all fine with me but to sit and talk to the man and the memories and then he asked me why I have not practiced nor taught within two years. I indicated to him why and he just looked at me and said that he or someone shall be back to me. So this was a very decent day to say the least. And yeah I met up with this lady friend and then there after when I arrive home I called my friend Jim, who was busy doing the family laundry and Jim was one of my first students when I was 17 and Jim said, "Isn't that something". Jim was right on the mark as it was...
So it really was a superb day. I don't make things up here and this day was one that really raised the bar for me in many ways. I won't sit and wait - but this is one of those things that seemingly was a coincidence and there are times when one is well within the flow but this day really was that flow and a superb Saturday to say the least. Aikido has always been a way of my life, although I have not taught in a while the philosophy of it has never left.
Aikido means in Harmony with your spirit when translated to english.
ReplyDeleteIt is really something meeting old friends. As I did a few days back. So, Aikido means Harmony. I was introduced to Yaw-yan [yao-yan]before.
ReplyDeleteThis is neat, for me it was really amazing and probably the best gift within the day. I have never studied any other martial art but this
ReplyDeletehas always been something which has been and is definitely apart of my life as other have there own hobbies. As most nearly all
my ways really are based on the foundation of how I was raised and Aikido within the mind and body was and has always been
within me and apart of me.
wow, very nice Jack, good luck within the teaching position! I can tell it brought back many good memories and it is so neat when those "coincidences" happen just when we don't expect them, but everything falls into place so effortlessly!
ReplyDeleteI have for years Suzy....I was the very first and youngest instructor on this side of the pond at the age of 17...
ReplyDeleteA clip from the newspaper back when I was in grade 11...
wow Jack, is that you on the right with the mustache? sexy man! ;)
ReplyDeletecircles amigo circles
ReplyDeleteIt's all within that sphere si....
ReplyDeleteAn amazing bit of synchronicity, Jack. Almost like it was meant to be somehow. I guess that's where the "harmony" part pays off in your devotion to learning.
ReplyDeleteWow long time no see - yeah I think so but right now as I am just leaving off here. Aikido is not a sport, it's always been an art. It was a very decent in how it all worked out. The philosophy of Aikido is what is truly taught in conjunction with the techniques, so this was a very fine day.
ReplyDeleteThat all said Doug, I bid you and yours a great Sunday and if not on Monday...
Sounds good. :-)
ReplyDeleteSounds quite interesting . Hope your week is wonderful as well
ReplyDeleteExcellent, looking forward to reading more about this. Keep us posted, if you want of course.
ReplyDeleteI hope you will understand when I say that Aikido seems to fit my image of you. I can honestly see that it would be something that is a part of your life. I studied Aikido for a short time, under the direction of the priest of my church. It was an eye opener and I enjoyed it very much. I loved that it is non-violent and flows with the other person, not against them. I hope you are able to teach your once a month class...
ReplyDeleteyou seem to be a man that is in harmony with himself, Jack.
ReplyDeletejack how exciting!!!! what a small world.
ReplyDeleteYay!!!! This is wonderful news jack! Exciting indeed xx
ReplyDeleteakido.sounds very relaxing .for the mind .interesting blog...[hugs]
ReplyDeleteThanks DJ, I met with one person after the seminar had ended today
ReplyDeleteand we shall see what becomes...
Thanks Cheryl, I am just on here and today was just doing two things and the day was well served :)
ReplyDeleteSusan, I had a meeting with a Japanese lady that was appointed to speak with me and we talked
ReplyDeletefor two hours but time very well spent.
Yes it is the original style which is called " Humbu " is something that is not a religion and it's certainly a non violent art as it's about taking the others energy or force/act and allowing it to be there own demise. As of today, I now know that all have been contacted and I will know within the time they so choose. If so, I wish to just do one class a month - much more on the ideology of Aiki, and not as much on the physical aspect right now.
ReplyDeleteNot bragging Kim, I really am not but I have literally done things and I am not the "Jack of all trades" but
ReplyDeletethere are areas like most that one has engaged in and has done well. And I can say that it is a small
world as before the internet I was connecting in more than one town.
Cinn I never have given out my motives or achievements since I was hospitalized
ReplyDeleteand this was the first within this area...and you your achieve as well within your manner.
That I think is what rendered a friendship although we do have different friends not all but
I don't clan it. I don't think you do either. So one step leads into another and I can honestly
say when you end up being in a hospital and working it this far - it's a cadence of determination.
Maybe, just maybe along with a faith structure. Everyone has something and this was part
and parcel mine.
Caroline it is, yet everyone finds there own area that they find that.
ReplyDeleteWelcome back from your trip!
