Picture Perfect - Urban Decay

Some of my Favorites Part 2 (15)

This week’s theme as well as competition within Picture Perfect is Urban Decay.

Now here is one that I have only one time did I see something and had a camera at hand. However I don't have many pictures that are about the decay of society coupled with the fact that there are bylaws that are enforced here very stringently. However here is another from Montreal.  Yet it could be any city of country within this industrialized world.

After a nights end there was some area that there was debris left all over. Bylaws are enforced pending the status of the government or the city and what they set up. As far as buildings some cities have it where a buildings can’t be left, the fact remains that there will always be decay. Although Canada is a rather clean country with most provinces and municipalities having very stringent bylaws and law enforcement that makes this rather difficult – unless one does wish to go looking for something that could be trouble within the decay of society. So this is my picture for Urban Decay, it's the trash that is left on the streets after a night and it's rather shocking to see how much is thrown out as it is a composed of left over food, bottles of all food and all types of alcohol beverages. Meanwhile there are people living on the top of confectioneries, restaurants, and they just literally get by from day to the next - it happens within each and every city (urban).

That to me is the decay of our society as we never take notice that there are people that for several reasons would do anything to have a good meal, meanwhile what wastage there on the streets. Urban decay has two sides to it. Those that are within poverty and those that are taking subways into town and thereafter enjoying a meal that easily goes from $50.00 dollars and with some it winds up being $300.00 dollars easily. Meanwhile others are trying to make ends meet. I would never take a picture of someone that is homeless. I don't think it's an ethical area within this theme called, Urban Decay. There are some ethical questions within this theme. Certainly so...

This is mine and we often look at what we have but we never take into regard the waste and what others don't have regardless of why or what the case may be.

We just walk on by...

  2. Wow, it does stick out like a sore thumb, doesn't it?? I have to laugh because in Hawaii, its the norm for locals to leave their trash out.. I think its a bit sad to see people scavenging thru another's discards.. One man's trash is another man's treasure as they say....

  6. Is urban decay a physical happening or a state of mind? Good pic, but that could be rural also

  8. A good photographer doesn't aim his camera up closed, it should always lean a bit on the sides. And ... *** this was a perfect example of that. This is rather a cool urban decay. Despite of the scattered rubbish, it is still a beautiful country sides.

***the missing words, it was actually a typographical. Thanks for bringing it up to me for clarrifications ... my thanks. hugs :)

  16. Very nice...Yes , it is the rainbow of humanity. Each seeing what they choose to see..hearing what they choose to hear and most important, how much they choose to account for. Some are quite blind and quite deaf...making it impossible to look outside themselves. Or , like your picture, askew, and precarious.

A very interesting and theme that really does have some real meaning while ethics with it as well.

  22. Tess I think that urban decay is economically, as well as a thematic area that is something that is really much more than a picture if you as me, I think this particular theme is one that is not a state of mind, it's a state of affairs of society at large.

  23. Thank you Milli....not sure if you have yours on yet shall check :)

  24. Thanks Heather, I didn't want to go take a picture of someone that was living in desperation, however this theme that Cherie placed out is more than words.
I will say that and you know it by and in what you do by way of profession. Thank you much Heather.

  31. I am not sure if you are within this group but I opted out of placing any picture by my choice as this is a topic which does take in regard humanity. There are some that are homeless for a variety of reasons. There are some due to economics, some due to mental illness, and for the life of me I could not disregard a person for the sake of a picture that was homeless and in a bad situations as such to just take a picture, now will I, Leveret. I thought I would make that mention.
As whom has really done anything to aid and assist or call the police to see that they get the proper care, some may have and if it's just for a picture of one lying down and not living life for a variety of reasons it's not they type of picture for myself that I would take within this them. In no way, shape nor form.

  36. Interesting read as much as your photo.
I like how you captured it at an angle that showed one side of the road all clean of debris, compared to this pile of waste.

  38. Thanks Crystal, I did not go on what here is called the "west side". I am not into taking pictures of people that are in hardships for what ever reason it is. There are some ethics with regards to this theme. I took into consideration all at hand. I am not one to take a picture of someone that is with less and living on the streets, however I thought this did fit within the merits of what I assume was the admins ideas with this theme. Looking at yours and thanks.

  39. Montreal is but it can come in many ways, I loved how you took history and brought it within this theme...
I don't reside in Montreal, I was born in New York but I reside in western Canada...I was there for three months and I it was a first for me and I enjoyed it.
However there is an upside and downside within everything, I felt this fit within it as did yours Sue.

The lighting in this photograph is fantastic, delineating all the detail & texture. Really an excellent photograph.
"End of an Era" is certainly a good title. Instead of sadness or regret, I like to imagine the history of it; the human pathos & comedy.

I could spend the rest of the day on these excellent photographs.

(I thought I was posting my comments on your page! Now I shall have to delete some on another's!)

  41. I was very impressed with Sophie's & left a comment on her page. Her work on the photograph has made it truly a work of art.
I may appreciate it in yet another way, as I'm a painter & graphic artist.
I haven't had a chance to look at all the others yet.

  45. I very much like the angle of your photograph, Jack.
An interesting 'touch" is the hanging basket of flowers just touching the crate!
(Actually, it's rather neat...not strewn all over!)

  46. well ... thanks anyways, geoaskier. Its not of great importance, my comments and my mis-spelled words [w/c everybody does, is just fine, no big deal on that one] or whatever - that means, it's there, and that's it. I type so fast you know, am not the kind who place fingers on the keys and do it one by one. thanks anyways. Blessings and hugs smiles*

  49. Once again I was not refering to your typos....I am respectfully asking about what you mean by.."a good photographer doesn't aim close up".....I've never heard this before and I'm not understanding what you mean....I'm a student of photography and like to soak up knowledge....just asking you to help me understand what you are saying here.

Your picture truly captured some areas that are very prominent within Canada as like anyother country.
Great picture within black and white.

  54. Thanks Keith....This picture of yours is one that defined Urban Decay in a most different/unique manner. It was great to see your pictures again.
Creative and the statement was really easy to see within just the picture as you have always been superb with capturing this within a level that
always inspires regardless of the subject manner!

  60. Thanks I saw yours and Kim I think many are thinking about the economic status and it's not all sad, but it really is food for thought.
Yours was great and I have really enjoyed this as it was something that certainly raised the bar and as well I think it really has unified
many of us in thinking about the situations we have at hand on what we call "Mother Earth". And people not at large but people
    in hard times.

I know that you write all so well and I really didnt know what you meant but I understand what you mean now as I think each and every person has been very touched within this situation that we have really expressed by way of the lens as well as our writes. It's an area that really is a mission perhaps. Just a thought.

  65. very interesting find, Jack! i agree..an intriguing presentation. u captured it well with great point of view & compo!

  66. It's not the law. Each part of Canada as in any industralized country there are bylaws and zoning regulations. There are places within each and every country that do have decay. So often I hear of how clean Canada is but there are literally places that are have economic decay as well as different bylaws just as each and every state...
