The late, great George Carlin did one of the really great comedy bits years ago. If you’ve heard it before, it bears repeating, and if you haven’t heard it, I’m sure you’ll enjoy his comments. He made us realize that the only time in our lives when we like to get old was when we were kids.
If you’re less than ten years old you’re so excited about aging that you think in fractions. “How old are you”? “I’m 4 and a ½”. You’re never 36 and ½, you’re 4 and ½ going on 5. That’s the key. Then when you get into your teens you jump right into the next number or even a few ahead. “How old are you”? “I’m gonna be 16”. You could be 13 but, hey, you’re ‘gonna’ be 16. And then the greatest day of your life, you’become’21. Even the words sound like a ceremony, you BECOME 21. ~Yes~ But then, you turn 30. Hmm, what happened there? Sorta makes you sound like bad milk. He TURNED. Yes we had to throw him out. There’s no fun now, he’s just a sour dumpling. What’s wrong here? What’s changed?
You BECOME 21... You TURN 30..., then just like that you’re PUSHING 40.
Wait a minute it’s time to put on the brakes here! It’s all slipping away. Before you know it you REACH, not STRETCH into 50…. and your dreams are gone. But wait a minute or better yet…. you MAKE it to 60. You didn’t think you would, didn’t even conceive the idea nor the number.
So you BECOME 21, TURN 30, PUSH 40, REACH 50, and MAKE it to 60... You’ve built up so much speed that you now HIT 70. And then after that it’s a day by day thing. By the time one ACHIEVES 80 and gets a call most often the answers for the day is, “Great, I woke up”!
That was great, laughs* liked that! Remembered too when I was still on my 15th ... used to say am 18 ... hurrying up to reach that age ... when I reach 29 I no longer brag about my age I simply smile. And when I turned , oopps ... the more I don't want to hear the age thing... but hey, you know what age I am at right now. hmm quiet young aighh. hahah!
ReplyDeleteGreat, :)
I'm not sure if I am PUSHING,STRETCHING, OR REACHING :)
ReplyDeleteAll three combined :)
ReplyDeleteMaybe four ~smiling~
ReplyDelete:)
ReplyDeletefast approaching 55 and thrilled to celebrate every bit of it.. cuz i never forget that my father died at 53 (i was 21 and, of course, i thought he was old!)... so i make the most of every day.. even if that just means relaxing....or a nice nap :)
ReplyDeleteSuzy don't get me wrong it's just satire, my family is riddled with cancer however I seize the day. We all do just what we need to do as it's life and we have this one opportunity while on this great mother earth. I nap as well, when I was 30, I thought I was an old man, thereafter I as time went on I do the same as you but it's all in the manner that we look at things. As right now I am just about to head off to bed and although I am not 80, if someone calls I might just be happy that I could get to the phone. But I PUSH it. :)
ReplyDeletelol jack.. i'm well aware of satire *i'm not as blonde as i look*.. today is my kindergarten teachers birthday.. i entered her classroom at the age of 4. in two weeks, it will be 50 years. she is on my facebook page lol.. and she remembers me with the face of the 5 year old. i told her today, she taught me the important things...including the importance of a nap.
ReplyDeleteenjoy your phonecall...and sweet dreams
I know...just joking with you...that would be something going back that far, as I went back to my middle school in Syracuse, NY and I met all my teachers as I went there to SU and back then I thought how they have aged so. My gym teacher had white hair and it blew me away. The name of the junior high was Gillette Road Middle School. And I don't see you as naive in no manner. I am off to bed here and wish you a great weekend. So good night and this is not a case or early to bed and early to rise, but we shall see. Good night Suzy.
ReplyDeletethats interesting..I dont think any of us really want to look beyond --the decade we re actually in ..tho?:)
ReplyDeleteAfter Hitting 70, I installed speed bumps...
ReplyDeleteYet they assisted within the cadence lol...
ReplyDeleteThe decade that we are in.....I know how I feel with regards to it Caroline. Yet I could not resist the satire of aging.
ReplyDeleteOh I've made it to 50 two years ago :-) and my dreams certainly have not gone and life is an adventure truly new things are happening in my life and I'm doing things I spent too much time being afraid to do before ..But yes isn't it funny how people talk about age..My older grandchildren who are a 10 and 11 like to be referred to as Pre -Teens LOL
ReplyDeleteLife is GOOD
T'is regardless it we BECOME 21, TURN 30, PUSH 40, REACH 50, MAKE it to 60 or live till the age of 101! :)
