Tomorrow and today for some shall(is) Friday the 13th but unless I’m missing it, nobody really places much weight in it, yet I could be wrong as I have in the past.
When I was a kid you’d hear it mentioned on the radio or see something in the paper about not to let a black cat cross your path, walk under a ladder, or step on a crack in the sidewalk. Now it’s just another day. I myself never did place much into superstition.
After all, it is just another Friday as like any other week, yet I think there are some that do still believe in superstitions, but for myself nah.
However, superstitions associating both the number 13 and Friday go back a long way. The rounding up of the Knights Templar for torture and execution by the King of France began on Friday, October 13th in 1307. Fear of the number 13 still lurks deep down in the back of
our minds today. Most buildings don’t have a 13th floor and, until recent times, almost all sports teams didn’t have a number 13 jersey. We stop at the twelve times table in school.
Ever wondered why that is? Apparently the rise of the compound three ten or thirteen came about because the minds of primitive humans couldn’t comprehend anything beyond twelve. Thirteen stood for the unknown, possibly dangerous, potentially fatal, a number full of vague and unimagined possibilities and therefore to be avoided. There is also the Biblical reference in which 13 gathered for the Last Supper where Jesus announced He would be betrayed. After that a myth grew in that if 13 people sat down for supper, the first one to leave the table will die within a year. I’ve never heard of that actually happening but, you have to admit, there is something about that number, 13.
Exactly :) people have always been frightened by the unknown or even change. Yet we have been graced by those who have not let the fears paralyze them and thus some of the worlds greatest inventions and discoveries..interesting blog thanks :)
ReplyDeletewow, I never knew where that superstition came from. thanks. good luck to all tomorrow... :)
ReplyDeleteEver hear the one about throwing a pinch of salt over your shoulder? You put it in your right hand and throw it over your left shoulder and it hits the devil in the eye lol ..Have a happy 13th and don't forget the salt :)
ReplyDeleteJK lol
ReplyDeleteMost welcome and within this I thought I would place it down before and if we have another power outage here tonight....looking forward to your writes Cheryl.
ReplyDelete~smiling~ thanks, I think! :)
ReplyDeleteSmiling big time but the history is rather neat to say the least.
ReplyDelete:-)
ReplyDeleteI am terribly superstitious. But thankfully, thus far, Friday the 13th has proven to be my lucky day. So ~crosses my fingers~ here's hoping good fortune continues. Have a beautiful day Jack! :)
ReplyDeleteYou as well, I knew there were some that might be :) Yet the history behind it and all I myself just am like Howie Mendel, I am obbsessive compulsive so I don't shake hand and have what would be much like superstitions. ~ Gotcha and a great one to you, Maggie ~
ReplyDeleteLOL Well I confess. I do the old salt toss on occasion and when visiting, I always leave by the same door through which I'd arrived. And the list goes on. Silly to some but that's just the way it is. *grin*
ReplyDeleteI quickly researched the meaning behind "crossing the fingers". I was going to post it here for you but I am sleepy. You could do a whole piece on the meanings of such things. Much like what you've written above, it's kind of interesting. Goodnight my friend!
ReplyDeleteWould be interesting however a good evening Maggie and as always all the best...
ReplyDeleteA friend of mine named his cat that...
ReplyDeleteLisa which was?
ReplyDeleteit is a bakers dozen that isn't so bad
ReplyDeleteCertainly so Tee :)
ReplyDeleteI hadn't even thought about tomorrow being Friday the 13th. Now I'm excited. I was born on a Friday the 13th and it has always been a lucky day for me.
ReplyDeleteSharon that settles that! I thought the history behind it was rather neat. I don't place much into Friday the 13th but the history behind it was interesting...
ReplyDeletea grain of salts i believed! Than that. lol.
ReplyDeleteSame here however what brought about this Friday the 13th, I found rather interesting Maritess.
ReplyDeleteThe history is quite interesting.
ReplyDeleteYeah, this was really what I found most interesting...
ReplyDeleteGood Morning
ReplyDeleteAhh the good old superstition issue! I dont think I am superstitious and the number 13 holds happy things for me!
My eldest daughter was born on the 13th and they have just bought a house which is also number 13, sitting looking at the thermometer just now it is 13 degrees outside, ohh is that spooky 'smiling'
hope you have a magical day.
I used to think of superstition as a fun game, but now I am more interested in getting rid of it, especially since some actually act according to it and believe in it. Our Creator has said to get rid of it.
ReplyDeleteHappy friday the 13 Jack..its going to be a great day..:)
ReplyDeleteA wet one it will be but that is all fine and a magical yet cautious day from here Karen. Yet so far, so good :).
ReplyDeleteBy the way enjoyed your write yesterday...
DJ, ironically Christ even had a belief not a fond one with the 13th - this I found all too interesting. How it all came to be seems that everyone was used to one to twelve, thereafter there was much caution with the numerical values thereafter. To each there own, but one thing it just started to hail here this morning...
ReplyDelete~smiling~ Julie, I am basically waiting for a call here with regards to a procedure that is going to be done with my knees, so now I am on call but this is enjoyable for now and its a great day regardless. I have been very captivated in this Picture Perfect Group as for a long time I have not partaken within it. And I know I have to get things going but one like I told Maggy, I am not superstitions but with this ongoing OCD, it's hard to stop doing something.....:)
ReplyDeleteKidding I hope you know. A great day to you down there in Texas as well.
So far, all is fine here on Friday the 13th!! Keeping my fingers and toes crossed!
ReplyDeleteHave a great weekend, Jack!! :)
It's just another day for me. Only it's a day of remembering, but nothing to do with the number 13.
