An anticipated 490 Tamil migrants arrived by way of a cargo ship seeking refugee shelter at the shores of western Canada today. They arrived earlier today near a Canadian Forces Base within the province of British Columbia. The migrants are believed to be Tamils from Sri Lanka who left their homeland in May spending almost three months at sea. Five ambulances started delivering migrants from the cargo ship to Victoria General Hospital. Security screening prevented a clear view of how many people were exiting from the ambulances that started arriving late morning. The cries of young children could be heard behind the security fence.
Security investigations immediately commenced by the Canadian Border Services Agency as well as the RCMP to determine whether this was a case of refugees combined with human smugglers or and as well whether if a portion of the 490 migrants were terrorists. As there is speculation that criminals or terrorists may have hijacked the ship, namely the Tamil Tiger Terrorist organization that have been outlawed from the lands of Canada since 2006. Canada has been very welcoming of refugees, but the government will be going through the process to ensure that the refugee system is not being abused.
The migrants are being transported from a Canadian Forces Base within British Columbia to various destinations, including Victoria General Hospital and the Wilkinson Road Jail in Victoria, British Columbia. On board the ship included, a six month old infant and two pregnant women who have been taken to a Victoria hospital today as the first passengers from a migrant ship that arrived earlier in the.
Canada has long been seen as a desirable haven to those seeking asylum, providing sanctuary to American slaves covertly traveling the Underground Railroad in the mid1800s to displaced people arriving from Europe following the close of the Second World War to Vietnamese families arriving on the shores of Canada in the late 70s.
In the years following the Vietnam War, over one million refugees fled the war ravaged countries of Vietnam, Cambodia and Laos. But the process of accepting refugees has also stirred controversy. In the 1930s, Canada accepted a modest 4,000 Jewish refugees seeking asylum amid begrudging public acceptance. In recent years, critics have claimed Canada's refugee policy is too lax, allowing rejected claimants to remain in the country too long. In June 2010, the federal government passed new legislation to speed the process of processing refugees.
In the first half of 2009, Canada fielded 18,700 new asylum claims. In comparison with 44 other industrialized countries, Canada was the third largest recipient of asylum applications, trailing the United States and France. The report also found the number of asylum applications in 2009 held steady with the year before, with 377,200 applications submitted.
Tamil families desperate to reunite with relatives and hopefully all does go well.
there is much fear amigo as is seen in arizona in the US------for me---i have never been a part of genocide or starvation/ wars of hate as in the former yugoslavia---parts of the sudan and the congo---what happened in rwanda----i see only the survivors and i have admiration for their courage and welcome them to the land of my birth-----for i have been spared what i can only imagine-----i do not fear the people but rather the circumstance that brought them to the place where survivors long to be-------someone rescued me in infancy and showed me love and tolerance and protection from those who questioned my birth---but then the ones who rescued me crossed the ocean themselves and came through ellis island----and from their journey came the love that found me.............................
ReplyDeleteI understand fully how you feel. The United States has came under scrutiny for the law passed in Arizona, but from my background I fully can understand and appreciate what they are doing and support it. The Tamil Refugees need some releif from what they left. I hope everything works out for them as well
ReplyDeleteYes, there is and in some way shape and form we seemingly work things out. There will always be something that does happen within the world but at the same time, as the saying goes - where there is a will there is always a way. Your own story as you have mentioned I have never known all these years and it would be interesting to know. Perhaps at some point you will write on your blog as I have known you for years merely by way of the writes Peno.
ReplyDeleteMike not at all....for myself. Yeah I as well hope this all works out well but you know as well as I that within these we do take much longer with our security measures. We are not as lax as we were years before yet lets hope there is a good outcome with all of this as I am sure there shall be. Arizona, I am not sure what you are referring to but I thought I would write this as I was reading on it just recently. We really are fortunate when you hear of a child that is merely 6 months old that is a refugee. But it seems to all work out.
ReplyDelete.it is sad .. the children ..cant ..respond.I hope there is a solution for them :)
ReplyDeleteOh I really hope the process going very well and that they reunite with relatives soon.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, we discussed about refugee in my French class today, it's an interesting topic.
Already the children and the mothers have all been moved to a hospital, and I am sure that most all shall
ReplyDeleteobtain a residency. But we do live within different times as all countries wish to be secure.
Alisa, this is an not typical that I write something like this but it's been so much within the news all over Canada
ReplyDeletethat I thought I would write a little bit on it as Canada along with other countries has always been seen as a safe
haven for many. Canada wishes to bring in more people as it's a large country - second to China in land mass however
we have a very small population, which would almost be the same as Australia. This came as a surprise when a cargo
ship with migrants was high jacked.
But there is much good news out there as well.
I heard that obtaining a visa to Canada isn't an easy thing.
ReplyDeleteAlisa there have been revisions done over the last three years I believe and it's not. But I think it's something that has taken place by way or in unision between Canada and the United States...
ReplyDeleteThe federal government has already accused some of the passengers of being members of the Tamil Tigers - the Tamil hearings begin Tuesday in Vancouver.
