For only the second time in her nearly six decades (think about it 6 decades)… as monarch, Queen Eliz addressed the General Assembly of the United Nations after leaving eastern Canada. She has no power yet she does stand for some areas in which are notable despite all that we have seen in an era of propaganda and no transparency. I myself like the queen. I feel as if she has a symbolic merit.
After a Canadian tour, she went on to challenged the United Nations on with the intention the international response to global dangers and promotes prosperity and dignity for all the world's inhabitants. She might be older but she is definitely not dumb. Seems that she takes all into consideration before she does collaborate with her writers, which I have been told she writes her own writes believe it or not. Regardless she went on to say “In my lifetime, the United Nations has moved from being a high-minded aspiration to being a real force for common good,” the 84-year-old monarch told diplomats from the 192 UN member states. “That of itself has been a signal achievement. But we are not here to reminisce. In tomorrow's world, we must all work together as hard as ever if we are truly to be United Nations.” Speaking as Queen of 16 UN member states and head of the Commonwealth of 54 countries with a population of nearly two billion people, Her Majesty recalled the dramatic changes in the world since she last visited the United Nations, in 1957, especially in science, technology and social attitudes.
She also praised the UN's enduring aims and values: promoting peace, security and justice, fighting hunger, poverty and disease and protecting the rights and liberties of every citizen. “For over six decades, the United Nations has helped to shape the international response to global dangers,” the Queen said. “The challenge now is to continue to show this clear ... leadership while not losing sight of your ongoing work to secure the security, prosperity and dignity of our fellow human beings.”
The Queen and her husband, Prince Philip, flew to New York from Toronto for a five-hour visit that will also include stops at the Ground Zero site, where the twin World Trade Center towers were destroyed on Sept. 11, 2001. She laid a wreath in tribute to the thousands who died, and then officially open the British Memorial Garden honoring the 67 Britons who were killed that day. Yet she did it with not just a focus on Britain she did it as well for all at that time as they will not be in New York for September 11th ceremonies.
The queen has no power yet she seemingly without the power has more influence than nearly any other human being as perhaps due to the fact that she is not within the political sphere – like a Prime Minister or President. Seems that the ones that are outside of politics have far more influence or at least a source from which they are taken seriously and not as ridiculed. However I could be wrong.
good post
ReplyDeleteNice thoughts
ReplyDeletei have always liked this queen-----not being a historian i am not able to speak on the pros or cons of a monarchy---seems to me that as queen she is able to oversee that which she must and not be bothered with the trivial egos of parliment------(or in the case of america--congress)-----her ability to address a body such as the UN with grace and intellect is to be admired-------
ReplyDeleteread my mind again...I could not say it better myself and you know what you say where many opt not too say. I really believe this she has seen so much as really is not a political figure yet a person of wisdom, intellect definately, and in times that there is so much thrown out there seems that she has surpassed many people in government and ...................there is something to be said for that.
ReplyDeleteShe is good, expeienced, and how many times she has done this let alone seen so many places around the world and Buckingham is perhaps now just a place to place her head down as she wishes to carry out things before the end of her time. Si.
sorry I am not a royalist and in todays world she is an anacronisum--the Brits hardly have money for their health system but to pay here huge suns well wow --just my two cents worth
