The Ego, Dr. Wayne Dyer

No one has ever seen the face of ego. It is like a ghost that we accept as a controlling influence in our lives. I look upon the ego as nothing more than an idea that each of us has about ourselves. The ego is only an illusion, but a very influential one. Letting the ego illusion become your identity can prevent you from knowing your true self. Ego, the false idea of believing that you are what you have or what you do, is a backwards way of assessing and living life.

You’ve probably noticed the word AMBULANCE written backwards on the front of a vehicle so that a person seeing it in their rear-view mirror can read it. When you look into a mirror, what you see is backwards, too. Your right hand is your left, your eyes are reversed. You understand that this is a backward view that you are seeing and you make the appropriate adjustments. You do not confuse reality with the image in the mirror.

The ego idea of yourself is very much like the mirror example, without the adjustments. Your ego wants you to look for the inside on the outside. The outer illusion is the major preoccupation of the ego.

The ego-idea has been with us ever since we began to think. It sends us false messages about our true nature. It leads us to make assumptions about what will make us happy and we end up frustrated. It pushes us to promote our self-importance while we yearn for a deeper and richer life experience. It causes us to fall into the void of self-absorption again and again, not knowing that we need only shed the false idea of who we are.

Our true self is eternal. It is the God force within us. The way of our higher self is to reflect our inner reality rather than the outer illusion. One is the ego, garrulous, demanding, hysterical, calculating; the other is the hidden spiritual being, whose still voice of wisdom you have only rarely heard or attended to.” He refers to this hidden spiritual being as our wise guide.

When we learn to transcend the illusions sponsored by the ego, we can access this wise guide. We can invite in the higher aspects of ourselves to function in their natural, loving, and integrated design.

  1. ... in other words, that ego capitulates others to put one under. Its the prime factor why individuals have that crab mentality ... they malice in each and every little thing that has no great importance at all ... just to make a useless point.

... love one another is the best remedy ... and yep, feel like a child ... have a heart liked a child, yet, be wise enough to have the wisdom of a prophet. tight hugs :)

  3. perhaps i am too influenced by freud------i like the simplicity of the science behind the id/ego/super ego-----i divide amigo----that which is scientific and that which is philosophical-----i have used this to study nature and the effects that natural behaviour has on adaptation-----including but not limited to the nature nurture debates-----i have to ask---is it the ego that creates the illusions or the lies and the stresses of society?----i was part of a street theater once and i arrived at an outdoor lecture appearing as an unkempt homeless woman----many in the audience asked the police to have me removed as i made them nervous---when my name was called to speak i shed the coat and wig and old shoes and walked on the stage---where i then refused to speak and as had been previously planned i was cuffed and taken away by the police per the audience request----sometimes amigo there is no need for words.................si?

  7. If you want to reach a state of bliss, then go beyond your ego and the internal dialogue. Make a decision to relinquish the need to control, the need to be approved, and the need to judge. Those are the three things the ego is doing all the time. It's very important to be aware of them every time they come up.”

  9. Ironic as Deepak is of the like of Dyer yet Dyer really started off as a sociologist in california and thought to write his first book and then one thing lead to another. Those that write really do have a talent. Ego, we all have an ego however..........no it's too early not going to go there.

It's bliss within the morning when all is silent and one can sip there own coffee even when it's only 3c :) Though within the moment :)

  11. Hemmingway thought so for the longest time, he often wrote out at his cottage within nature and came up with some of his best writings, sometimes I have heard he was in his longjohns even only at the temperature of 25F. But his ego was within nature he was not tied to what the trees or anyone was saying he just did... :)

  12. Our ego is our sense-of-self, without which, we would collapse into those around us, take on their feelings and opinions, and become a "go alonger." While having a strong sense of identity is a good thing, some people develop a very large ego to the point that their behavior becomes narcissistic. In their opinion everything is "all about them."

A former boss had a sign posted in the conference room in which office meetings were held. It read "Leave Your Ego At The Door." I can tell ya, I met up with some really HUGE egos in the corporate world!

    Fascinating and thought-provoking topic, Jack!
