Oh No - That Word called Lying :)

If we could wave a magic wand or make a birthday wish like in the movie “Liar, Liar”. After which everyone everywhere had to always tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, what a wonderful world it would be…just bliss.

~ Yeah ~ OR WOULD IT BE?

What about when she asks, “Do I look fat in these clothes?” As humans have evolved mentally, we seem to have become better and enhanced at being “economical with the truth”. We “contextualize”, yep I made my own word there Contextualize, meaning we shave the truth just a ……a little, so we can’t accuse ourselves, nor feel guilty of out and out lying.

“Liar” is such a negative word really isn’t it – then when one sees the word there is an automatic thought much like a yield sign if not worse as it really does have bad vibes to most all of us as we have been raised to have ideals and this word lying just was not apart of the diction or we were taught that it should not be apart of how we conduct ourselves as we were always to be accountable as well as tell the truth.

So we rationalize some things just by telling a little bit or a piece of the truth at times in, which we don’t wish to tell the whole truth. I know there have been times within my life that I told a half truths and I am sure that you have as well. Or we just remain as silent as we can be. By telling a bit of the truth but not the whole truth in some areas we do make way, a police officer may pull us over when we are slightly going over the speed limit, and when he or she asks those first questions, we may just ever so gently rationalize or just say a little bit with regards to the entire truth - but we shall keep this all here ok - ok deal.

We’ll say we can’t make it when asked if attending something, giving the impression we’re committed elsewhere or at least there’s a good reason not to go when the truth is that we just don’t want to go, plain and simple. Or we will tell a “fib”, which is theoretically a little lie about something trivial, fooling ourselves into believing that it’s not really a lie, it’s just a fib.

Unfortunately, the triviality of something is a subjective judgment. Then there are what we call, “little white lies”, called that because, in the mind of the person telling it, it can’t possibly cause any real harm; it’s only a teeny little white lie. But, we can’t change human nature and we can’t just wish it so…so, everybody does it. Everybody knows everybody does it.

Nobody can do anything about it because the fact is that it is socially accepted, as against acceptable, to misrepresent the facts as we see fit. And, don’t you just hate it when someone talking to you begins a sentence with, “To tell you the truth”, or, “To be perfectly honest with you”?

Sure we all have and shall within various times within our lives.

  1. You are quite right to about lying, some people are compulsive with it and that makes it all worse.Have a great day over their hugs Rosiex

  2. Hmm this is a really interesting post, I try my hardest to tell the truth and actually am not to bad at keeping to it.
but you are right, there are times where this cannot help a situation, sometimes the truth hurts and thats not a good position to be in.

Telling the truth without causing pain and distress is hard to master. I have been called crash and harsh with my truth, so what I do is, always be true and truthful to me! then scatter some nasty truths with a bit of sparkle and love, hopefully then it comes over as caring!! not saying it always works..

Have a wonderful day lovely ;-)))

  3. Well if I told you that I fell asleep at 7pm last night and awoke after nearly 8 hours at 2am would you believe me :) As I did but we do at times do those half truths - we all do :). This is more within the sphere of life. "I loved what you made", meanwhile......., "Your baby looks too cute", well we are not blatant with the truth and yet we are doing as we see as necessary. We all do it, we are not saints but I think ya know what I mean within this write.

Some are compulsive with lying and then there is that .......normal lying?

  4. Karen I am much like you as I do enjoy being as authentic as can be. I guess this write places some humour on this area within our lives. Perhaps there is a justification within half truths :)

  5. I am a little like Karen ... I believe in the truth no matter what ... but if its a not so nice truth ... I will speak it gently in a kind way .... sure sometimes it creates a reaction ... but once that person gives thought to it .... at least then they know that I have given my truth.
Is the truth not just an opinion? ~smile~ .... what I believe and think may not be what someone else believes ..... and perhaps thats why some people lie because they want to be accepted? Just a little ramble of thoughts here .....

  6. Lynne likewise, but I am sure perhaps there is a polite fib if you know what I mean. I love authenticity don't get me wrong but I do think there might be another word for lying or fib. I know I am not a saint but it's all within good taste and as mentioned there are times in which we tend to say nothing with some people within our lives, I remember very well someone asking me if something looked good and I had no choice but to say it did and this was offline while somewhere else within Canada. If I told her the truth as I had before with a few other dresses, well......but then I went and bought one and asked the lady owner what she felt was best. :) Seemingly it worked and that is the truth ~smiles~.
    It's all good :)

  7. Well, i loved the way you lied Jack ... oh don't take that seriously, it's just song ... hmm :)

Now going back to lying, I do that too ... most specially the 'time' thing ... and from friends who just love to eat out and gallivanting, the easiest for me to say no is 'am busy' but that's all. Sometimes I just want to have the 'me' time all by myself.

Yet In truth ... i may be weird, but, I haven't lied at all yet ... not yet. Hard lies, i mean :)

  8. It's all in good fun as we all do it to a small extent. But hard lies no. It's all within the way we are and we live within society of, "Thou Shall Not", yet I am sure if not certain that even the Pope has fibbed now and then. :)

    Coffee time!

  12. Its all about tact ... truth and tact ....
If someone is wearing something that I dont think suits them ... I will probably tell them I dont really like the dress ... but the choice is theirs and as long as they are comfortable in it ... thats all that counts .... its her dress after all not mine ~grin~ .......

  13. ~ Smiling ~ kinda one hand is on the chin and is balanced by way of the arm and ones head is nodding yes :). Tact you got it there Lynne.

  14. I do my best not to tell any lies. I don't think my personal taste constitutes the truth. I don't think my saying all of what I may think is the Truth. Why would that be a half truth? I don't want to be lied to so why should I lie to you? I think if someone starts out with "“To tell you the truth”, or, “To be perfectly honest with you”? " they are trying to be diplomatic, to soften the blow. They could just as well say well, maybe you better sit down.... :-))

And I believe we CAN do something about it. We can root it out, stop finding it socially acceptable. A small lie uses the same mechanism as a big lie.

  15. I couldn't agree with you more ~smile~

  16. then there is the lying by omission, or not telling. That's what i'm "good" at. I have a friend that i call brutaly honest. She never beats around the bush and always tells you what she thinks. In ways it is quite refreshing....you never have to guess what she thinks or feels. But there are definitely times when we wish she could be more tactful. It can be quite awkward.

  17. I think that the worst thing is to "sugar coat" something, and tell someone what they wish to hear in order to avoid possible hurt feelings. It's disingenuous. Most people will respect you more for being honest and straightforward with the truth. They may not like it (the truth) at first, and/or possibly even get angry with you, but at the end of the day, they will respect you for your integrity and honesty.

Now, with that said, here is a funny "little white lie" to make you laugh :)

    Girl: How do I look?
Friend: Omigawd! You look so cute in that outfit!

*She really looks like a loaf of bread trying to escape from a spandex prison!* lol!

  18. Well,,, I tend to be brutally honest, when I talk. But,,,, more times than not, I just be quiet.

  19. white lies
    lies of omission

online there are what i like to think of as "lies of deletion".. it can be said, be there.. then deleted.. followed by the oft heard "i never said that"..

innocence is easy to proclaim, when all proof is erased.

which is why i like that multiply sends me copies of posts.. or, when i read something that really sets off a trigger in me - i copy the text and save it with a screenshot. "proof", only for mine own eyes, of character - or lack thereof.

  20. I realize we do this.. There are days, when someone asks me "how are you?" and I say "Fine thank you." even when I am not really fine.. I rationalize that with "They dont really want to know" or "How is it any of their business what a lousy day I have had". So I say, Honesty with Discretion.

  21. We all do our own things within our own ways, Suzy. This is more of a humours manner in which each one of us to some extent conduct ourselves within life. But I can see what you mean.

  22. Ditto here Rashmi, I really didn’t think this would bring about such an array of views. :)
But it did from online to offline.

  23. Yes Jack we all tell these little white lies..But to be perfectly honest with you i would rather tell me the truth than that little white lie...:)

  24. I think we all do within life Julie. I would rather tell the truth as well, and for the most part everyone really does. Yet it's all within a nice satirical manner of looking at things :)
