It's a Jungle Out There

As we get set for the Labour Day weekend, what was it that Tarzan said to Jane after a hard day swinging through the trees?
“It’s a jungle out there!” We’ve heard that expression over the years out in the working world. A few years ago I read an interesting piece on how to better survive in the jungle.

For openers, I was reminded of the fact that a cheater is a cheater. What someone says or does in the most innocent of situations speaks about his or her real self. If someone cheats in a friendly game of cards or golf, then beware. This is quite probably that person’s true nature and in business dealings that trait will surface at one time or another. It is also true that a person who is nice to you but is not nice to a server or a cashier is not a nice person.

We’ve heard this before, but the best way to survive in the jungle is to say what you mean and mean what you say. In business, promises are made and broken every day leaving a terrible impression and hindering progress in business dealings. Credibility is crucial to long term survival and promising then not delivering is worse than not promising in the first place. Remember, too, there is no such thing as a secret. Don’t assume requests for confidentiality will be honoured and don’t repeat confidential information in written form as it could come back to bite you.

Finally, my favourite way to survive out there is to keep laughing. A sense of humour put to use every day can be an effective shield against the slings and arrows fired at you from liars, thieves and scam artists.

  1. Survival in the jungle for me is easy! A positive mind and knowing the truth of who and what I am, allows me to accept the games others play as I realise we all have lessons to learn.
The untruth of someone is always easy to spot .... its all in attitude and those who shout loudest are usually the ones hiding the truth of who they really are. Negatives are a major signal for me and fortunately/unfortunately I pick them up quite quickly ..... and then I just turn and walk away .........

  2. The obvious things within life are just simply obvious under this medication it was kind of like being on "truth" serum perhaps. Lynne you do it well and for the longest I have been captivated as your all too smart but I look for the good things out there. Doug really summed it up last night rather well......so a positive way is a good way and well I don't take myself all that serious unless I am recording or....whoopila :) that may sound pretentious.

However, I love to sing and have and I need not defend one thing on here, it's for pleasure. Mind you I never told anyone yet about my other site.

  5. I never play cards much less cheats. Am the one being cheated ... loose change, as always. But admittedly i do love to crack jokes, where i feel safer! But not just to anyone, they must be really a long time friends not just aquaintances. And i do laugh to my hearts content ... that is me.

And last time i joked around was -"bungee-jumpeeing in the nude!!! I read a friend friends comments, and i second the motion ... got a great laughed there!!! It's the first time i have heard it ... fun, it was fun ... really! :)

  6. I have found the jungle is getting more and more crowded and the animals have become meaner. Many snakes as well. I use to love a quiet day in the jungle, but now I am wary

  8. I have been going over sayings and one came to mind "qui vole un oeuf, vole un boeuf) he who steals an egg, steals an ox, a way of saying honesty is in both the small and the big things. Definitely need a sense of humour. :-))
