A Blizzard Rocks the Mid Atlantic
The Mid Atlantic, Northeast United States and Canada have been hit with blizzards this weekend. crippling travel across the region and causing hundreds of thousands of power outages. Five deaths appeared to have been caused by the storm system, which stretched from the Carolinas north to New England and spread into some midwestern states.
The 33 centimeters of snow that fell in Washington, D.C., by late afternoon was the most ever recorded for a day in December. Earlier Saturday, snowplows cleared the runway at Andrews Air Force Base in suburban Washington as U.S. President Barack Obama returned from climate talks in Copenhagen. The White House said Obama rode in a motorcade back to the White House, instead of taking his helicopter, because of the conditions. Washington was declared as a snow emergency for the city and forecasters warned that conditions could worsen. Philadelphia also declared a snow emergency and the school district cancelled all weekend activities. The storm was coating streets and highways in Philadelphia and the rest of southeastern Pennsylvania. Forecasters said the storm system was expected to generate winds up to 55 km/h, which could cause near whiteout conditions. Authorities in many areas asked drivers to stay off the roads if possible. Officials at Dulles International and Reagan National airports warned travelers to check on the status of their flights before heading to the capital's airports. The storm system coming from the Gulf of Mexico has been spreading out across much of the Atlantic coastline bringing a mix of snow and freezing rain to North Carolina, Tennessee and parts of western and central Virginia. Several hundred motorists became stranded in western Virginia had to be rescued by four wheel drive vehicles and Hummers driven by members of the National Guard. Virginia was declared a state of emergency ahead of the storm. State police responded to hundreds of accidents statewide as snow accumulated on interstates and rural roads.
A number of flights departing from airports in Toronto and Ottawa were delayed or grounded as a major snowstorm churned over the eastern seaboard. Toronto's Pearson International Airport have been outright cancelled. Ottawa International Airport made cancellations as well. The east coast seems to be getting hit with one of the worst snowstorms in the history of 2009.
my truck is buried...there is about two feet of snow in our parking area and what's worse is it's freezing...will be a few days before I get out. temps are going to be below freezing for the next week...thanks goodness we still have electricity. fingers crossed.
ReplyDeletehave a friend who was flying into pa today and hoping he made it safe! most of the airport had already been shut down.
ReplyDeleteMike this I knew yesterday but I didn't know to the extent of all that has happened there as well in the eastern portions of the US and Canada they say it's the worst storm of the year. Hopefully it shall take a shift within two day.
ReplyDeletePray the people specially the elders could withstand the cold spell. Take extra care yourself Jack.
ReplyDeleteYeah they are and this one was a combination of the Artic jet stream combined with a movement from Mexico. Here we don't get that weather Arielle. It's very rare but when Air Force One has problems landing and the airports are not prepared for that - it's really a situation as whenever AF1 lands or a military aircraft protocal calls for all planes to remain in place or those that are looking to land will not land till either of the two have landed.
ReplyDeleteEven the mideastern states were hit hard and this would be in your neck of the woods.
I feel sorry for all that is buried in this storm especially the elder. I'm just glad I don't have to leave my house. I have friends in Toronto that are away, hope they are okay.
ReplyDeleteOh over here we can survive what most never have realized :). But yeah it's storm that I does impact the elderly but then again there are great organizations that are out there and in place and I believe within a one to two days this shall all pass.
ReplyDeleteIt's probably good that my parent's in Marquette Michigan are out of the farm house and into the senior apts now as they would have a very difficult time at the farm in all this snow. There sure are some bad blizzard like conditions all across a large area. Hope you are fine and stay safe there. Here we have just a little dusting of snow.
ReplyDeleteI hope so.
ReplyDeleteI am not sure of what is in place within the US but here there is those things that are in place with the health organizations. Still I do hope as well as I didn't quiet picture all that was happening there till I took a look and it's a large storm to say the least. Kelly kudos to you as you have a new position that allows you to stay warm and allow it to pass. Toronto is much the same within the upper east coast of America so it shall pass. I lived in Toronto for a few years in Yorkville and that the eastern portion as you know has always been hit by the much snow especially around Watertown as it's right near Lake Ontario. But it shall pass.
ReplyDeleteCheryl I couldn't agree more. Here it's the same as in this part of Canada we are a dry climate and we rarely get that harsh snow as we are not near large bodies of water nor are we near either coastal line or large lakes such as there within Michigan. They are in good hands and that would be a large relief.
ReplyDeleteI'm blessed that when I do start working in January that I am working from home as I hate driving when the weather is bad. I wouldn't sleep all night if I knew I had to go out the next day and the weather was calling for snow. My friends are currently at their home in Niagara Falls, I just hope they don't get buried in and are unable to make it back to Toronto to their family and friends for Christmas but like you said it should pass so I'm hoping all will be fine.
ReplyDeleteKelly, I believe Pearson International has opened up as of tonight. But to travel from Niagara Falls by car I would not touch until this does pass. And as well within 2010 you have it made there Kelly.
ReplyDeleteThis storm has missed us thankfully. It's been very quiet and mild here in Southwest Michigan. Temps around 30F and there is only 2-3 inches of snow where I live. Doesn't look like it snowed at all since at least Saturday.
ReplyDelete.I hope it passes soon .. seems very severe weather worldwide this ,,year ..
ReplyDeleteToday here was fine and I really have not thought much on the weather on the east today as it's been a long one but it was interesting as I went to the store and ran into a person that is from here but has lived the last 20 years in Yorkshire. But the weather here is fine it's just moderately cold - 20c. So that's fine :)
