The date has not been disclosed for obvious security reasons but he is following what so most other Presidents did in the past. There has always been a relationship between these two countries and seemingly Obama is following some of the things that are traditional and most Canadians do support him more than our own Prime Minister.
If only we could go back in time and Prime Minister Pierre E. Trudeau was around at this time.
As in many ways he was much like Obama in the way that he thought. But Trudeau has passed away and has not been the Prime Minister for a long time. In earlier times he was Prime Minister he was a professor and he traveled the most of the world. He was very contrary to what the status quo was for a leader or any person in a political position and within Canada and Internationally some loved him and some hated him. But after when he left office and after many years had passed to this day many Canadians see Trudeau as more that just a past leader of Canada. He was one that did many great things. I would dare to say that he spoke as he saw it. And as he was an atypical leader he created a society that stands for what it has evolved to today. So often socialized people equate to being like a communist. However, a socialized country such as Canada has many similar values within it. Our two countries have had a huge history behind them. But when it came down to what took place with the last eight years most Canadians along with the government of Canada did not agree with the agenda of Washington. Ironically, we have had the same problems in a different manner
than the economy of the United States.
Capitalization is a good thing but as we see it took a whammy on every country. I realize that George Bush is leaving and now making his apologies to the people of within the United States, but there are so many things that he did with Canada that when Borrack came to the scene there was more hope with someone new, as I dare to say that we have never internalized our economic values. Nor within our military we have never wavered from what we saw as right. I don't think George is going to becoming to Canada, he is too busy in trying to leave the Oval Office with some dignity. I just wished that he would have spoke in such a normal manner as he has been recently.
As before President Bush was probably faced with less than what President Elect Obama has right now seems to be doing it much differently that George and Dick. I never believed in Guatanamo Bay, and when you have a Geneva entity you would think that the law would be followed. How many innocent people some which are Canadians have been placed in there just due to racial profiling and our government has petitioned for justice and to at least bring them back into our own country andbe placed on trail.
Which leads me to a friend I have here in the city that I live. He is from Iraq and I met him just yesterday morning before I had the problems with my car. He married a Canadian woman and has three children. He had to wait for five years before gaining allowance into Canada - so we do have a system that you cannot easily get into Canada but if you wish to reside in Canada and do the appropriate measures and pass all the security checks - you will have entry into Canada. I really did not know how hard it was to be a Canadian.
So Wajid lived all his life in Iraq and I asked him about all that went and was going on in the Middle East, you could tell by the way he looked that it was not good. He has lived here for 8 years ironically he got in right around the time that security was just starting to make a big change. His feel on the Middle East was not against the people but he indicated that he would never go back in his lifetime. I think that says something to those of us that do live in a country that does have a democratic value.
This all said I am so looking forward to the transition without high expectations. I am certainly proud - yeah I said it, proud that Obama is coming here not based on telling Canada what to do, but to have his first discussions. Canada is not better than the United States nor is any nation better than another. These are the times that I believe a man that was a movement within his campaign will not please nor keep every promise, but I think that he will bring about an imprint. I will dare to say that for the first week after he takes office, we may see the all trading markets around the world go up...
We have so many things that are happening and this is my own thoughts with regards and from a ordinary person that has had the opportunity to live in both countries.
From my view point I believe that were there is a will there is a way. Not just between two countries but by the means of several. I am glad that there is such a person that has come along at this time. And the statue of liberty - that lady looks across the horizon and stands proud. As she came from France but certainly is American and has seen many things transpire over her time....
As for George W. Bush, I think what he is doing now he should have done when he was in office. If you notice, he is more personable in comparison to the manner he held himself as during most of his time within his Presidency. At least he is saying it the way it is and I think that is giving him some resolve. But I think that the people come first and the leader does have too make hard decisions regardless of whom it is, but when you have to apologize for so many things....I don't know what to say about that....
There is always hope!
Bravo! I share your hope that the Obama transition will bring some measure of economic relief. I admired Pierre Thrudeau for his direct style--he once flipped off a bunch of photographers at a G-8 Summit who wanted him to jump up from a stairway in front of some palace and pose with the other leaders. He preferred to sit down a while more (I really liked that.)
ReplyDeleteHe also was very gracious to American leaders, even to Ronald Reagan, a guy he didn't share an economic view with. He told a group of protesters in Ottowa to stop heckling Reagan at a joint apprearance they had. "Hey, people, I don't get treated badly like this when I go to the States," the PM said. "Enough of this, ok?" Classy thing to say.
Trudeau was a very direct person with a style of his own. He was a leader but a very different one. As far as with Reagan and Margret Thatcher he did not fit in with them and there have been several books with regards to that but he was truly a very different leader. And it would be amazing to see what and how he would interact with Obama. Right now what was set up many years ago is finally happening again. These two countries are talking and I think that Obama is the signifcant factor in that as he too is atypical as a leader. But he brings about something that will have not an immediate outcome, but will stimulate several things I feel...
ReplyDeletegreat post! I share simliar feeling!
ReplyDeleteThank you.
ReplyDeletei watched the election closely and cried ... as corny as it sounds, yes i cried when obama got elected, out of happiness... the hope that embodies his election is beyond expression... he truly seems to be a man of his word. i look forward to hearing more of his meeting with your prime minister... and the rest of the world. we finally can let the world see who america truly is... with a man that represents the very best of us.
