~ The Entitled Youth ~ Do we live in a society - where the youth of today feel that they have a special privilege? I would like to hear your take if you deem it fitting.

  1. After reading several blogs in light of yesterdays horrid event, what came to mind was this word entitlement.

  2. I am sure a lot of people can feel a sense of entitlement, and they do not necessarily have to be young people. This is reflected in the idea that so many seek to feel privileged, yes; even if they do not always earn such a status. ~ Blessings!

  3. Yes, In the Philippine setting stereo-typed of family. Here we don't break the so called knot/s, it is as if we are indebted our whole life to our kid/s if it happens we have. It continious. It isn't that I say it was wrong, but, maybe we are a tad over protective and overly slaved :) to them. But who aren't if we have the means. Instead of asking them to take care of themselves upon graduation in hi-school - the parents take charged. Until such time they can stand on their own two feet.

The priveledge is never ending until the time that they are grown up ... and that's ever so true to which often times is good also, for we took care of our elders when the times comes of I would say - looking back to those grateful things done

This was certailny not normal behaviour.

  7. What happened to Colorado is something else, it is beyond normal. The psycological level must be taken seriously there and must be taken w/ utmost sensibilities. And the sorrounding circumstances why it was commited

  8. Entitlement---For awhile now there has been this social theory that everyone gets a good grade in school just for being there. And everyone on a sports team gets a trophy for participation. So alot of younger people think they are special with all the basically unearned awards.

  9. I think the youth of today that have everything and are given way too much by the parents feel privileged and do whatever they want even if its wrong or a terrible act because they know the parents will bail them out of it all. Too many kids these days dont care to know right from wrong and if they do they just dont care. Its nice to have money but too much is sometimes evil in the making.

  10. Perhaps this is where the youth of today don't have the same regard - not all - mind you but there have been names for different generations - I found that there is a carealess mentality with those which are given too much which leads to a malice of indifference. This was on my mind Marty pertaining to the event of recent in Colorado.

  11. Rich - which means they really dont have the same skills or characteristics which come
with the old school mentality where if you want something you need to work to obtain it.
Rewards without merit - leave much to say with this new generation which is not called X.
It's not with all but there is no doubt that there is too much given without the need to
    earn it.

  12. I don't feel that the youth of today are taught respect. Many young people do have a huge chip on their shoulder.. they are often educated and so feel like they dont need the wisdom of the older generations.

  13. I really need to double check this quote - picked it up some time back and (although I downloaded a Hesiod translation) should verify. But -- I do think it is that old, and close to the original Greek in meaning:

“I see no hope for the future of our people if they are dependent on the frivolous youth of today, for certainly all youth are reckless beyond words. When I was a boy, we were taught to be discrete and respectful of elders, but the present youth are exceedingly wise and impatient of restraint.”
Hesiod, Greek Poet, ca 700 BCE

  15. There are some which are taught values. I believe that from generation to generation
we are finding that there is a decline as wisdom comes with age. Respect might be
a commodity which is being lost within the fast lane of time. Thanks for the comment.
