This day in History 4 March 1933 Franklin D. Roosevelt

  • On 4 March 1933, at the height of the Great Depression, Franklin Delano Roosevelt was inaugurated as the 32nd President of the United States. In his famous inaugural address, delivered outside the east wing of the U.S. Capitol, Roosevelt outlined his"New Deal"an expansion of the federal government as an instrument of employment opportunity and welfare – and told Americans "the only thing we have to fear is fear itself". Although it was a rainy day in Washington, and gusts of rain blew over Roosevelt as he spoke, he delivered a speech that radiated optimism and competence, and a broad majority of Americans united behind their new president and his radical economic proposals to lead the nation out of the Great Depression. In 1921, he was stricken with poliomyelitis, the virus that causes the crippling disease of polio. He spent several years recovering from what was at first nearly total paralysis, and his wife, Eleanor, kept his name alive in Democratic circles. Actually she took on the role as president as his health declined. As he never fully recovered and was forced to use braces or a wheelchair to move around for the rest of his life. As governor, Roosevelt worked for tax relief for farmers and in 1930 won a resounding electoral victory just as the economic recession brought on by the October 1929 stock market crash was turning into a major depression. During his second term, Governor Roosevelt mobilized the state government to play an active role in providing relief and spurring economic recovery. His aggressive approach to the economic crisis, coupled with his obvious political abilities, gave him the Democratic presidential nomination in 1932. During his second term, he became increasingly concerned with German and Japanese aggression and so began a long campaign to awaken America from its isolationist slumber. In 1940, with World War II raging in Europe and the Pacific, Roosevelt agreed to run for an unprecedented third term. Re-elected by Americans who valued his strong leadership, he proved a highly effective Commander in Chief after the December 1941 American entrance into the war. Under Roosevelt's guidance, America became, in his own words, the "great arsenal of democracy" and succeeded in shifting the balance of power in World War II firmly in the Allies' favour. In 1944, with the war not yet won, he was re-elected to a fourth term.

  3. It was a little ironic with I pulled it up last night as I was read a few peoples writes on with regards to Obama and all the politics that surround it. And it was ironic how history sort of repeats itself.

  4. I remember his talks on the battery operated radio as a small child. Obama does not sound anything like I remember. You felt safe when he spoke. i do not feel safe when Obama speaks.

  5. That would be something with in those times. Look at how far we have come Tee. I don't know with regards to what is all happening here we have had our own changes as of yesterday. I had mentioned on a friend named Mike's page that perhaps we are within a stalemate with politicians. I really don't know. I used to love some poltics well they were not really politics I guess they were more with the history of places - one that I know of. But who really knows right now with regards to whom is right and whom is wrong.
But it was ironic that on this day what was being dealt with and how it really mimics in many ways the same things as we have right now. We really are within a new era - I hope it goes into a good direction.

  7. Yeah I found that he was a very noteable person Terry as it was a time in our history. Elanore literally tended and was really the President although at the time
no one knew it till later on. And then Chuchill, it was a different era within our history then, yet it's history has always been something I have been fond
    of.

  10. I really enjoy looking up some little thing within history. It's kind of an ending night cap pending the time but I do enjoy it especially the one that I found on Helen Keller.
This one hear was had some irony to it. Back then there was a "New Deal" brought to the table, again we have new deals - what has changed? Yet I love the history of Roosevelt.
