Canada Sticks with a Decision

Canada will not extend its mission in Afghanistan beyond 2011, Prime Minister Stephen Harper told U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Tuesday. Harper and Clinton held a brief meeting Tuesday morning ahead of a meeting of G8 foreign ministers in Gatineau, Quebec.  Harper's statement came after Clinton indicated to the press that she wished for Canada to stay in Afghanistan after 2011. 2011 has been the year Canada's combat mission in Afghanistan is has been scheduled to end. White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs reiterated at a news briefing in Washington that the Obama administration would like to see Canada continue its mission.” There are a host of civilian non-combat activities that Canadians can and we hope will contribute to. They're our valuable partners in this coalition. Canada’s parliament passed a motion in 2008 agreeing to keep Canadian soldiers in Kandahar until 2011.In the interview, Clinton suggested the possibility of keeping "non combat" troops in Afghanistan to assist with training and logistical work. Yesterday, Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon indicated there would be no military mission after 2011. Canada’s government dispatched troops right from the beginning and as well through several administrations have made amendments to when requested yet was one of the first that went into Afghanistan and stayed in there and has amended the dates two times in leaving. The feeling of the government is that Afghanistan must assume a greater responsibility now. President Obama decided to send 30,000 more troops to the country but also said the U.S. would start withdrawing troops in July 2011. Under this plan, there will be nearly 100,000 U.S. forces in Afghanistan this year nearly triple the level when he took office. NATO has not made an official request asking Canada to extend its combat mission in Afghanistan, which began in 2002. At least 2,500 Canadian soldiers are in Afghanistan, serving under NATO. Since 2001, when the mission began, 141 Canadian soldiers and two civilians have died. Canada never went into Iraq in 2001, Canada went into Afghanastan and has maintained its presence since day one in. I truly believe that when one takes all things into consideration there is a time stay true to what you have done and there is a time to bring troops home. The way I feel is that you can’t fix everything that is going on in the world and economics plays a large role within this one as well. Sometimes a country stay true to decisions that are made. I do believe there is a time to bring back troops, as you can't fix all the problems within the world. Yet within NATO there is this great commodity called surveillance, it was done during the cold war and now by way of NATO there is a much better surveillance coupled with the idea that Afghanistan would continue to rely on nations for years. In my opinion

I believe it's time to bring troops back - not just for Canada, but within many countries and do what was done years before. Peace is not easy but there is a large cost to trying to maintain peace.

  1. And with you as well. Cinn I believe in peace. And I have always believed within alliances. These two countries have worked together by way of norad for years. More than most know. However that all said there is a price to peace and while we have our very freedoms. I feel that we are a secure, history has always proven that there is a time to withdrawal troops. Especially when there is a time in which it's time. History has always illustrated this. But in this era there is the technology and there are bases that have been around these areas for years. I believe now is the time to bring back troops. It's just, you can't fix everything within the world, but you can try and then know when one has lived up to the terms of peace and peace keeping.

  2. Its about time that they stop these things. And leave Afganistan on their own, so they can have peace that they truly deserves. Still remembers my History moons ago, while am still a very small kid when my teacher in history brough this up to the class, and it pained me to realized up to this very days, how war can ruin lives. And how can war can shattered one's dreams ... and i could still vividly remembered, the anwers i gave to the question my history teacher asked us, and it goes like this ~ the inteventions made by america to the afgahanistan" and that answered gave me a flat 90. Well, looking back, am only twelve* years old that time, in high school ... and it came straight from a babes mouth.
    tight hugs :)

  3. Well put argument Jack. NATO including the United States cannot continue to prop up a fractious country with a rotten government forever.

  4. I wish our country would do the same, you are lucky to have a government willing to stand up to pressure from US.

  5. hmmm the video is rather crude but the last sentence says a lot, and I tend to agree with it. Don`t ask your people to go there if you are not ready to give them the proper tools. May there be peace for all.

  6. Peace would be wonderful wouldn't it? Too much I don't understand but my thoughts and prayers are with all those deployed on foreign soil & places of war. Having a son who was deployed to Iraq and safely home now I know what it feels like from a Mother's perspective. It's hard I support our troops and pray for their safety. There are GOOD and loving men and women out there who didn't ask for the war but love their countries and go in with a heart that longs for PEACE. They are away from family and loved ones , my son lived in a tent. I'm not educated in political things but I do know the news can be one sided ..I wish we'd hear more of the Good news..

  8. Doug it's we have our very own freedoms only due to what our governments decide on and I do believe that when there is an agenda that is set into place you stay with it.
Peace is a tricky area however a decision when made is always a good decision - the outcome only can be measure in history.

  9. It's not the USA, it's an ensemble that make up Nato. Alliance have always been good even England is part of NATO but I feel that there is a time to bring them back and we live in times in which there is a very united global alliance within this. The USA has always been a main thrust within the military. It's not the people it policies that are set and within a global manner I think it's always a trick one to keep up with what is of most importance. For myself, I don't think that Canada needs to change there decision. Yet I could be from Missouri < it's an old saying :)

  10. Cheryl is would, you know that you have had some of your family members in the military. I wrote this as it's obviously played out in the news here in Canada and in some other countries but Canada has always been known as a peace keeping country. We often turn the page on these matters that give us our very rights but I do think that Canada has made the right decision with this one. When I think with respect to the men and women over there, as well as the cost. One has to weigh out what is of most benefit. Peace is tricky, maintaining peace yet peace is something that I feel now can be done by surveillance in these times. It's not my usual post but when so many talk about what they have in life. We only have it due to one thing. That we do have a means and was by way of our armed forces. Yet governments will have a mandate and each one has there own decisions. If all left what would be the worst outcome?

It's a complicated one yet it really is about peace and nurturing and protecting the freedoms within the world in a globalized manner. I enjoy the good news as well. I am not sure the benefits warrant the cost of all of these troops still having the same presence they have right now.
