Haiti Nears 200,000 within the Death Toll...

I have been reading and you know there is such a situation that is taking place well the largest catastrophe that has happened within the last 100 years. I was reading a friend's blog by the name of Doug and it brought me back to thinking about Haiti and within our countries one would think that we do have an obligation to take action at least faster action for the medical needs within Haiti. Right now it's approaching 200,000 thousand within the death toll. All nations have invested so much money within so many areas that will our countries be able to get this done faster? It amazes me where we have gone and I really ponder on what will happen with this. As it seems that we have spent so much money in the last ten years that we really don't have the same abilities that we did post 9/11. Yet one would think that we can do this. And I am unsure if within all industrialized countries that we will. I find that to be rather sad to be honest. If it was within our own countries we would be so much faster to act - Yet it seems that it's beyond apprehension.

Seemingly we have come to be nations that are based on investing on things that have a rate of return.  Just my own thoughts here as I have been doing some reading and it just amazes me where we have come to within the last five years - did we go forwards or have we become a society that is so self indulged.

I would hope not....

  1. I think people are responding but it takes time to get supplies and people organized. The country is unstable already. Many roads are blocked from the earthquake and the only way through right now is by helicopter.

  2. the Haitian people seem to think force will get them water and food...the military already has taken over the airport for security reasons...the USS Vinson is sitting off the coast with the best triage unit in the Gulf but they can't get patients to it

  3. the death toll figure is an abstract figure which no one knows for sure-keep that in mind-the Haitiens also need to take a hand in this-the world is doing what they can and so it is unfair to even think we the world are not-after all the Haitiens have their own weak infratructure to answere for so much-when even your neighbors shun you?

  4. Dana but do we really have the funds at this point?

  5. Yes it is an abstract figure it could be more for all we know Heidi. It's something that really baffles me to be honest...

  6. the money comes from the UN and donations from other gov. we already are using the military in Cuba so we are not far away-the hospital ship is used in disasters all the time by the have been on board it is a great hospital ship-
also money come from different funds etc. and regardless of how the news says we have no more money that is irroniouse -

  7. probably less most disaster figures usually are corrected on the downward side-not to say the death toll will be terrible but right now I feel terribly over exagerated-like in the tsunami figures at first-was corrected way down ward-

  8. it's absolutely horrible ..but what is even worse is that an earth quake of 7.0 or greater is predicted to hit southern Calif in the near future.

  11. Cat I don't know why Canada has such a large affiliation with Haiti, our Prime Minister here is considering opening up a fast immigration. But that will not resolve this...
However what I see right now is that there is some structure put into place so that women and children can be tended to..my own concern right now is the medical needs.
And there have been planes deployed that could not land and went back and as well we have had some of our RCMP that have been killed when going in there so it's
    a very hard call.

  12. Remarkably there have been times in history where it's been said that "we can't do it"....and we did. And we shall.
    Good night from here....

  13. I think everyone able and available in Haiti is doing all they can to free survivors and treat the injured, and the USA for one sent aid immediately.

Its horrific, a tragedy beyond words

  14. I have seen wildly varying death tolls.

You have touched on what is crucial here: " investing on things that have a rate of return" If we were to consider a type of return other than monetary, we would get to the heart of the problem.

I read that the Red Cross warehouse had been pillaged. Why not swamp them with so much food, etc. that no one would get the idea to steal? I am sure we have the money for that. But we cannot force people to change their hearts and that is the basis of the unhappiness.

  15. good morning Jack...yes, the funds are there, the supplies are waiting , we have the airstrip under military command and choppers are shuttling supplies as fast as possible....3 million people who already lived in slum conditions will be hard to control...let alone feed and supply water to

  17. During tragedy such as this they should be able to cut through the red tape and get what needs to be done faster. My thoughts and prayers are with all of them, it's so sad.

  19. I talked to one retired Air Force general from Ottawa last night - it actually provoked this as this is the situation as so many countries have tried within the first initial weeks to get in there with police forces and with food and then France sent a Hurk and they ended up turning around and comming back. Money is a main thing here but most of all it's the society and I guess by way of the UN peacekeepers that might be a way to at least get the food to them. Do we all have the money. No we don't or we borrow it from other countries not all but some. Desperation leads to this. The same thing has happened DJ in other places of the world. Once we stabilize and neutralize then we are able to begin. But this comes during a time that it's going to be very hard. It's not just one country doing this there are several that are trying.
The largest concern is where to contribute right now and there are a few very good organizations.

  21. I am going to post a friends blog within here later...all I know is that if we forget about the country and begin to look at the immediate needs of a place that was hit with the large earthquake in 100 years - where there is a will there has always been a way. I know a man that did this and directed it within another era. It's a subject matter that need not be politics but rather a think tank of thoughts and prayers. I have learn more about this today as I will be visiting a man that understands the history far better than I. I do believe we need to cut through the red tape and in a unified way as done with other situations - get it done. Tragedy can be resolved if we resolve it before it gets out of hand and unfortunately Haiti has always been left alone and seen as a country of the likes of some others that have never been able to get out of the situations.

  25. red tape is not the issue...it is the destroyed infrastructure and lack of access now due to roads being blocked and limited space for aircraft to land

issues that can not be discussed in this forum are the root case of the situation in Haiti

  26. Our hearts should go out to those in Haiti and with that compassion hopefully whatever else we can do .

  27. Dana of what you speak at this very moment is being resolved. I think the reference to "red tape" would be a variety of things that have been on going within
Haiti for years and decades. As we know.

  28. Cheryl I think that we will have a difference that takes place but I don't think that it's going to happen overnight.
This will be something that does not come overnight yet I do believe that there will be hope and there will be
assistance and an infrastructure that allows an infrastructure to render medicinal needs. This one is going to
take some time but just think about a child that has rendered an infection and could have had antibiotics yet
the youth passed on only due to no infrastructure to allow medical people in. But it shall be done....
I would wager on that as it's a good act of humanity.

  29. It's so terrible to think of one nation in the modern world that has so been left behind the rest of the hemisphere. Listening to people who have been on the radio and have been to Haiti recently, I'm am struck by how primative the transportation system was beforethe earthquake. There are only two airports in that part of Hispanola and one has only a dirt landing strip. Right now appeals are made for such basic goods that its clear we in the American States have let this country slip too far into an abyss. Yet hope and compassion may yet save many.
