A Very Unfortunate Situation in Haiti...

The red cross reported earlier that 50,000 thousand are dead and that the reality is they're projecting 100,000 thousand. What an unfortunate situation. I have not been keeping up with the news till this evening and I don't know what paper around the world is not reporting on this very serious situation.

Aid thus far from what I can see are:

U.S. $100 million US
Canada $50 million
European Commission $4.52 million
Spain $4.52 million
The Netherlands $3 million
Germany $2.3 million
China$1.03 million

I have been reading the newspaper can catching up on this as it's an ongoing thing on the television. As well as on the net I could stand to be corrected but this is the worst catastrophe to hit in the last 100 years. This certainly is not a good thing however it has happened.

Caribbean earthquakes of the past:

Jan. 12, 2010: Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Magnitude: 7.0. Widespread damage as epicentre of quake was 15 kilometres outside the capital. Number of dead unknown.

Nov. 29, 2007: Martinique region, Windward Islands. Magnitude: 7.4. Quake destroyed buildings, and much of the island lost electricity. One person died.

Oct. 8, 1974: Leeward Islands. Magnitude: 7.5. Damage was minimal, and no one died because the epicentre was far enough from any inhabited island.

Aug. 4, 1946: Samana, Dominican Republic. Magnitude: 8.1. Quake and resulting tsunami killed 1,600.

Oct. 11, 1918: Northwestern Mona Passage, Puerto Rico. Magnitude: 7.5. Quake killed 116 people and caused $4 million in property damage.

Feb. 8, 1843: Leeward Islands. Magnitude: 8.5. At least 5,000 people died in a quake felt from St. Kitts to Dominica. This was the largest earthquake to hit the eastern Caribbean. In Antigua, the English Harbour sank.

May 2, 1787: Puerto Rico. Magnitude: 8.0. Possibly the strongest earthquake to hit the region. It caused widespread damage across Puerto Rico.

June 7, 1692: Port Royal, Jamaica. Magnitude: unknown. Quake killed 2,000 people. Much of the city slipped into the ocean.

  9. Most all countries are...well this is something that I have not been up on and I don't like to throw out utubes but it is a situation that I believe that renders the
best within people. The history of Haiti has never been a great one economically but perhaps in the after math this will be good time to rebuild it.

  21. The devastation has been horrific--as I have seen from CNN and other sources a major problem is that the airport at Port Au Prince has only one functioning runway---the US Air Force has supplies, and plenty of international relief teams want to get in there but its hard with such a devastated infastructure in that country--it was only beginning to make some progress before this natural holocaust. If ever there was a time to put aside political and religious pronoucements by our so-called elite, this is it.

  22. Doug went I got on here I was amazed with how much I have missed on all that was going on here and I was reading the paper and then watching the television and it truly is something that is going on that althought the country has always lived in harsh economic times throughtout it's history they really did have been hit with something that even in this day and age by I read were Haper, Clinton, Obama and so many wish are going in there for the people. It does remind me that althought we have these areas that anything goes these days it really come to my attention as I literally have not been keeping up on international affairs and yeah one would hope that aside of our economies that by way of intervention this is one thing were there is something done I don't know what the answer is but truly it's something that when you see these faces and all that has taken place there it's truly significant. It is a time to place it aside I do feel that is politics and when one sees a person laying down do they walk past. Our world can be a harsh one but I do still believe that we live within a society(s) that this is that time. Mind you it will take much and will be long, as you would know the history there and the economic status but it's the things of what I would call the good actions that can be taken. One would hope.

  26. It's devastating.

I hadn't seen the speech by the Governor General, how very sad. I've never seen her like that, very emotional.

My heart is with the people of Haiti. There really are no words.

  27. No and I literally have not kept on it but a the same time there were some that did write on it from what I can see.

  28. When I think about the devastation there it makes anything I have to face seem so trivial. I've been watching some news but I'm sure the reality hasn't really hit me ...yet I know it happened , it's awful I pray for the rescue efforts and for healing and strength for those who will be rebuilding and going on so much sad loss of life..
