The flower is with regards to Rememberance Day in which all crown countries around the world participate in. The red poppy pin symbolizes our respect for those that have served Canada in All the wars with the exception of only a few.
I should have known that, but perhaps since Malaysia is no longer part of the crown counties, Rememberance day is celebrated on different date, that is on July 31st ... a month before the Independance day.
The lapel Poppies that are worn in Canada today were first made, beginning in 1922, by disabled veterans under the sponsorship of the Department of Soldiers Civil Re-establishment. Until 1996, Poppy material was made at the “Vetcraft” sheltered workshops run by Veterans Affairs Canada in Montreal and Toronto. The work provided a small source of income for disabled ex-service persons and their dependants, allowing them to take an active part in maintaining the traditio of Remembrance.
I'm glad, that is so ... where the veterans, though in small parts are remembered alive and taking part in the tradition of the remembrance. As I've recently read, someone said: "Caring for a dead veteran is easy...bring a wreath, say a few words and walk away. Caring for a living veteran requires time, money and a life-long commitment."
I was looking at another hill back then and at the same time I was concerned with my grip as we were not really all that prepared to be climbing - but we did.
