Secret Recordings by John F. Kennedy...
Fifty years later after the Cuban Missile Crisis, the national Archives have pulled together documents and secret White House recordings to show how President John F. Kennedy deliberated with advisers to avert nuclear war.
This Friday a new exhibit, “To the Brink: JFK and the Cuban Missile Crisis,” opens illustrating the showdown which took place with the Soviet Union. While the recordings have been available to researchers for yeas this is the firs public showcase of Kennedy’s recordings to replay the manner in which he handled a very tense time within history.
In the fall of 1962, Soviet leader Premier Khrushchev ordered a secret deployment of nuclear missiles to Cuba that was soon detected by United States Spy planes. On October 16th Kennedy was briefed on the photographic proof of the missiles sits being developed. U.S. officials determined from the sixe of the images that the medium ranged missiles would be capable to reach Washington, Dallas, Cape Canaveral, Florida and any other areas within a proximity of 1,000 miles of Cuba – the time frame was within minutes. Soon after it was then learned that there were an array of longer range missiles that could reach any part of United States – as well as Canada as the two were seen as one country by the Khrushchev.
What is so significant is these archives now available to the public illustrate the standoff which took place over 13 days. As well, it was a time which gives proof of a time which was the most dangerous time in history where we came to nuclear destruction.
As Kennedy leaned toward a blockade order to prevent Soviet ships from sending more military supplies to Cuba, some military advisers though it was a weak response. Within the archives there are the sounds of heated debates within the Whitehouse.
This exhibit will travel to various cities first Washington and there after in Boston.
Its always been my fascination to read history for it brought us what is today. It could hurt often times knowing how it was then yet these past could make or break a nation that each and every nations should learned to deal with to avoid what was wronged comitted then, am hoping and praying it would teaches the lawmakers to avoid the mistakes that was deliberately pursued in the name of 'whose country is more knowledgeable and powerful when it comes to those-so-called- nuclear things.
ReplyDeleteLet's all pray for world peace Jack and that could only be attained if there is peae in each and every heart specially by these powerful people.
tight hugs, Jack
The past brought us to where we are now - history is a fascination for myself. We do live within a state of the wanting for Hope and Peace. I found this interesting as I find that John F. Kennedy was a remarkable man.
ReplyDeleteI'm eager to learn more about this, I was so young at the time. It does sound fascinating. I too have always admired Kennedy. We share the same birthday; May 29th.... I often wonder if he was alive, what our country would be like. I think he would have accomplished great things if he got to complete his term.
ReplyDeleteI have read so many interesting things about him and found him remarkable man also, regardless. The world seems so young then full hope. And learning from history, Cuba suffered the way Philippines suffered on those years of struggle dating back 1895.
ReplyDeleteThey often say history repeats itself I pray it won't. Considering those years of struggle dating back, gosh, I could only look up and say ... did we accomplished anything or those 'things' just keep on a never ending loop until everybody grows old and the next generations comes in and begun again the never-ending peace talks, Jack.
Thanks for the utube inputs. It becomes more interesting to know our history.
tight hugs
He was a remarkable President...
ReplyDeleteToday I went over and visted with my father and it was remarkable to speak with him on this very subject. There are some other matters that did take place at this time yet I find it incredibly facisnating to say the least - John Kennedy I have always found to be one leader which was fasinating to say the least.
ReplyDeleteDuring the Kennedy era - society lived in a much different manner that what we have today yet all said this exibit would be something to be able to see.
I thought I would add this link to this site as it's an interesting read:
