Thus the story it may serves some purpose....
In ancient Greece (469 - 399 BC), Socrates was widely lauded for his wisdom. One day the great philosopher came upon an acquaintance who ran up to him excitedly and said, "Socrates, do you know what I just heard about one of your students?" "Wait a moment," Socrates replied. "Before you tell me I'd like you to pass a little test. It's called the Test of Three."
"Three?"
"That's right, "Socrates continued. "Before you talk to me about my students let's take a moment to test what you're going to say. The first test is truth. Have you made absolutely sure that what you are about to tell me is true?" "No," the man said, "actually I just heard about it." "All right," said Socrates. "So you don't really know if it's true or not. Now let's try the second test, the test of goodness. Is what you are about to tell me about my student is something good?"
"No, on the contrary...." "So," Socrates continued, "you want to tell me something bad about him even though you're not certain it's true?"
The man shrugged, a little embarrassed. Socrates continued. "You may still pass though, because there is a third test
the filter of usefulness. Is what you want to tell me about my student going to be useful to me?"
"No, not really...."
"Well," concluded Socrates, "if what you want to tell me is neither true nor good nor even useful, why tell it to me at all?"
The man was defeated and ashamed.
This is the reason Socrates was a great philosopher and held in such high esteem.
To each blog may it be it's own, but for those that like to play games, is it really worth the effort? I think so...
Very, very good blog. I always put the whole truth into my blogs. The Test of Three, is something so many folks, we work around and in various other places could put to use.
ReplyDeleteGOD bless you greatly this day.

Good Morning Jack,
ReplyDeleteAs children growing up my Grandmother would say in the midst of conflict..." Ask yourselves, is it kind...is it necessary...is it true!" Thank you for this. Now I know where this came from. May I have permission to copy and send this to my children, and grandchildren...also my brother and sister? They will certainly understand this.
I always enjoy reading your posts...they are so wonderfully profound.
Have a lovely day. I hope you are feeling better.............Char
Interesting story about Socrates. If my mothers family had similar sayings that may have come from this philosophers writing, I don't recall them. Very common on Dads' side of the family to hear it said, "If you can't say anything good, then best say nothing at all" and "What goes around, comes around."
ReplyDeleteI have heard some say they run across blogs that seem to only be gossip about other bloggers, but I really have seen very, very little of that. Most seem pretty content to keep it to what's going on with them and their interests, opinions, etc.
Hope you got to get rested up over the weekend. Are ya ready for Monday?
Thanks Char, it was not much with regards to anything more that puting out a things in which are so often played out on the internet. As I will now have the next week of one late working time, I think I will be commencing my day in this manner.
ReplyDeleteYou and I are going to have a talk there Varian.
ReplyDeleteSure, Jack. Just say when.
ReplyDeleteRev Scott the test of three is with regards to what the intention. I think that so often there is a trickle up effect and a trickle down effect.
ReplyDeleteThe intention of of a person is so often understood withing that test of three.
These are very wise principles it is always good to remind ourselves of; certainly words of wisdom.
ReplyDeleteJust got in the door from house browsing and there are a few people that I do know and I do respect by way of messenger, I dont know 99% of everyone here however that all being said a discussion gave way to an understanding....Thank you Norma.
ReplyDeleteThere are people on here that I had picked not for the reason of anything else but being a co collaborative. Sometimes there are several people that I get pms from and I delete them as if there is not an intention that has any meaning - there is no purpose. That sounds harsh however, that is the way I choose to do it by my own choice. I have never breached nor need to do a cya for myself. Thus I won't.
ReplyDeleteSo interesting and enlightening. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteVery true words...and you are thinking along the lines of another dear friend of mine who posted similar thoughts on his blog just today. the people I want to know here are those whose intent is for genuine communication. No hidden agendas needed.
ReplyDeleteHonesty and integrity never hurts anyone....it's a building block.
ReplyDeleteWhen very young, my father got tired of his little tattle tale, moi ;-), and so told me if I had nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all, He also said if I persisted he would start taking part of my allowance away every week..;-)... good deterrent..lol .. He found my weak spot... So then he started teaching, after about a year of this, I no longer gave him money back, but he said I gave him something else... pride in his daughter... won't forget that one :-)
ReplyDeleteWOOOOW thats why we became friends Jack. We have same thoughts to post.
